I think you're taking this the wrong way.
The complaint isn't just to remove them "because it's silly," the main point is that they are unsuitable for a serious, professional workplace with the majority of jobs involving the use of dangerous machinery. I won't detail how getting your hair caught can and will have fatal consequences - a simple google search will show you that. And yes, while some jobs don't require the use of heavy machinery, it is incredibly likely you will be around it during long-term employment aboard the station.
In addition to that, it just doesn't look professional. People with this sort of hair typically aren't focused on business or scientific work, they're models and performance artists who place value on aesthetic rather than how practical and professional they look. Which, again, returns us to the first point, being that hair of this length is absurdly impractical will get in your way, and the way of others as way, with lethal consequences.
