  1. But... why. A checkpoint makes no sense when everyone lives on horizon. What would the checkpoint officer be realistically doing, exactly? That checkpoint could easily be circumvented anyways by going into maint. If anything, I would love more ways to enter and leave the round that aren't centralized in just one place. And in fact not too long ago I moved cryo to the top deck, so that if bottom deck is vented/dangerous/exploded, there's a different place to leave the round. This should also absolutely not have shutters or blast doors. It should not be up to some sec officer to decide who joins or leaves the round.
  2. ...and to anyone who upvoted these two posts: How do you expect maintainers, developers, and contributors, to be motivated to work on anything, when this apparently is okay to post, and even is upvoted by different people? This kind of toxic and accusatory tone, implying that devs don't actually play these roles, that their decisions are dumb and misinformed, and can be ignored. Implying that devs are just looking for things to remove or make worse with malicious intent. Why would the same devs who literally just got you INDRA to play with (and many other additions, bugfixes, refactors, throughout the months and years), would want to work on anything else, when this is the kind of toxic feedback that they are met with over a simple change like removing insulated gloves?
  3. I very much agree with other posters, Omi and Matt, so I will try not to repeat their points. Medical is the only department where players are proud of exploiting bugs, and will downvote and shit on developers or maintainers who try to fix these bugs and oversights (medkit abuse, multisurgery, etc), or really for doing anything balance-wise to medical other than adding new and more shiny toys to heal people (and advancing the power/feature creep). I think removing (or at least, nerfing) sensors would be a net positive. It would be good for antags, make their life a bit easier, and I don't think it would result in more ahelps about dying. Now antags could afford to simply just injure their target and not kill them, cause they don't have to fear the FR sprinting to their victim's location. I also hate to see the "just use jammers bro", cause the barrier of entry to antagging is already sky-high. You need to think and remember about a million little things, otherwise you may be fucked, or someone may be upset. People will say it is a "skill issue", but at the same time will criticize the antag's every step, won't even give them a chance and assume they're just an antagmain greytider. I would like to see the expectation that the FR will always come to save you, gone. Same with the expectation that medical is supposed to save anyone, as long as they have a pulse, even with 2BA and 1% blood. Death should be a possibility, a thing that just happens sometimes. If you want to avoid death, it should take some conscious effort to prepare for it, beyond just turning up sensors to tracking. You can even see people say that, without sensors, medbay would have to actually... coordinate on radio, as if that is a bad thing, instead of FRs just running to where the sensors lead them, and back to medbay with a patient pumped full of chems. It is bizarre to me. Medbay is the only department where forcing more coordination is seen as annoying and unwanted.
  4. I fully agree with the previous posters. Relay OOC is really awful, with the constant snirking, rudeness, brigading, passive-aggressiveness, horny/sus-posting, and all the other things that are just inappropriate but not exactly immediately ban or strike worthy - which is what makes the issue more complicated than "just ahelp it, bro". It is driving people away from participating in it, including staff, and that should really be saying something. Some people have already declared, "if I have to use the maincord OOC, I will just not use OOC", and honestly, this is the kind of shitty elitist attitude that is one of the many problems of relay OOC. People thinking and acting like they're better than the "huboids" or "maincord cryptids", instead of, you know, actually helping new players integrate in the community better.
  5. Now the Intrepid is for science to use as they like, and BC/XO have little authority over it (they get the Canary). This suggestion is kinda outdated now with the Canary being added.
  6. > 1. Besides money and employment, how are Vaurca discriminated against? I think it's kinda, they're generally not really integrated into society. Like the average Vaurca can't go out and buy a house and live in it, or make investments. Like yeah, it's both because they live in hives and a Unbound has to listen to its Ta and Queen and the like, but also because the nations that host them wouldn't really allow that freedom, as they don't trust the Vaurca. A C'thur will be heavily monitored by the Federation, a K'lax even if living on Moghes will not really be able to live with Sinta together and will have to congregate in their own Vaurcan settlements. Also while it's not exactly strictly discrimination, but it's kinda related concept, Vaurca are generally considered "different" and "alien", and so are distrusted but other species, who may have very little or no actual contact with any Vaurca. Like when/if we go visit Konyang, it would be believable that Vaurca could be denied entry into shops or bars at all, for example > 2. How do unbound Vaurca think, and how are they affected by things like VR and augmentations? I find augmentation and VR to be a very interesting subject. It is typically bound Vaurca who are the most augmented, and even then, unbounds on Horizon would have very little augmentation. Oxygen filtration, limbs, but most importantly, the neural socket. The neural socket allows for interfacing with the hive network communications, as well as accessing the Virtual Reality at any time (even if not represented in-game), and the ability to have the Vaurca's consciousness uploaded to VR after death. VR itself influences Vaurca life on every step. Training, learning, entertainment, research, art. There are Vaurca who are not happy about being taken out of VR and into the "real" world (though VR is very much real to them, and not "virtual"), while other Vaurca do not leave VR at all in their life. Every realm of every Queen is going to be different, too, with Vaurca taking different roles in each, some more abstract, some more utilitarian. > 3. How does Yska view the other hives? What about other species? I would think Yska would see K'lax as superior to the other hives, but try not to boast or brag, and treat the other hives respectfully. It would be aware that K'lax have their strengths and weaknesses though, and would know the situations of the other hives. If other Vaurca from different hives were to be fighting, Yska would try to defuse the situation. Yska would see Sinta as on the same level as K'lax, that being a necessity to ensure survival of the Hive, and to maintain good relations with the Hegemony. I don't want to say Yska would be "brainwashed" to think like it does, but the character is supposed to have been only just recently introduced to non-Vaurca non-Sinta society on Horizon, and like, I would like to see how the relations with Vaurca from the other hives and species develop over time. Initially though, I would imagine Yska to think the other species like Humans or Skrell are strange, in how they're very different from Yska have seen and been used to so far, but I don't think it'd be distrustful or disliking the newly met people. More just, curious, to learn new things, and try to adapt to new situations. > 3. What does it see as the traits of a "real K'lax warrior?" I would imagine it would be to, first and foremost, be loyal to its Hive, its Lord, and the Hegemon. It would never try to compromise its own Hive, would always try to take care of its Ta and other K'lax Vaurca. It would also try to follow the Sinta Warrior's Code, having learned theirs ways in VR and on Moghes - be honest, protect the innocent, and if it failed in being a "real warrior" it would rather submit to the punishment than run (and become Guwan/di... but most likely just be deemed defective and culled).
  7. I'd really love this idea, "the fleet", as long as like, it doesn't really have any warships or other combat spaceships. This would explain A LOT of stuff that are currently just handwaved.
  8. Capybara was supposed to be operations' pet.
  9. BYOND Key: Dreamixpl Character Names: Shpresa Maglina, Zuleika-Varushka Xrimqil-loix Species you are applying to play: Vaurca What color do you plan on making your first alien character: RGB 130, 150, 20 (yellow-green) (Vedhra brood) Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: I think Vaurca are very cool, and I think their lore is very well written. I really love how integrated they are in other species and nations lore, and do not just exist in a vacuum. There is so much story potential or conflicts that are possible due to the way Vaurca are set up. Vaurca from the three hives can compete with each other, but could also cooperate despite their differences, now as they have found themselves in the Spur. There are also the queenless, love them, or hate them. At the same time, pretty much everyone that is not a bug, should have something to say about the bugs. Whether it's a Bieselite weirded out by Zo'ra bounds being full citizens of Biesel, a Sinta Kataphract fighting for honor of the Hegemon alongside a K'lax, or a Skrell who was arrested by a C'thur serving in the Nlomkala. Or even just about any human, either hurt by the Lii'dra invasion of Tau Ceti, or generally just disgusted by the weird bugs taking their damn jobs for dirt-cheap. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Unlike most organics, and similarly to synthetics, Vaurca are designed and pre-programmed. Generally, a Vaurca does not really choose by themselves, who it should be, what should they do, where, when, and who it should be loyal to. If the Queen or Breeder tells you to go there, and do that, you do it. Otherwise, you may just be recycled. This of course applies mostly to unbound Vaurca, and bound are entirely different matter, closer to lawed borgs than people. Vaurca also do all kinds of things, that non-Vaurca do not: augmentations, biological engineering, the hivenet, even if these are not really extensively represented in-game, they are all very cool. There is also the discrimination, monetary and the like. Cannot be hired by SCC at all, neither by Idris. Character Name: Za'Akaix'Yska K'lax Please provide a short backstory for this character: Yska is supposed to be of Vedhra's brood. I would imagine Yska to be hatched not too long ago, a few years or the like, on Tret, the capital of K'lax. Yska would have been made and designed to learn the ways of Unathi, learn their weapons, tactics, with the ultimate goal of preparing to fight against the Lii'dra, should they ever come again. At first, Yska would train in VR, and because of their good performance, would be granted the opportunity to travel around Moghes, and get actual real-life experience with the Sinta. Both to learn their culture, but also to get on better terms with them, do some PR work, and the like. Everything for the hive, and the hive is loyal to the Hegemon. After a while, Yska would be transferred to Ve'katak Phalanx, first rented out by some rich Hegemonic merchant to provide standard private security work, like guarding against pirates. And lastly, would be transferred over to Horizon, after getting consent from their Lord, still working under the Phalanx, to show the other hives how a real K'lax warrior should look like. What do you like about this character? I've only ever really interacted with Vaurca via my Federation Skrell chars, but that's kinda been a long while ago. I think a K'lax would be very cool, to get a lick of Vaurca and Unathi lore, both at the same time. I would love to interact with Vaurca from the other hives, as well as with the non-Vaurca, being all honorable and proud of being a Hegemonic K'lax. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I think it's alright. Notes: It is illegal to deny a Dreamy Vaurca.
  10. I think tag-based loadout is superior in every way over category-based. If it looks unintuitive or that it takes too much clicks to get to what you want... I think that is just muscle memory, and you got too used to the previous system. Category-based loadout is objectively more confusing, and does not work fine. Categories are just one huge mess of buttons only ordered alphabetically. There is "cosmetics" category right between "belt" and "earwear". "Utility" and "general" are both redundant and may as well be joined up. Categories in general are either basically empty with 5 items, or 30 items with no real order except alphabetical. See the xenowear categories. A lot of items of the same "type" are also spread out between different categories, for example, "surgical apron" is in the "suits and overwear" category - but the zeng variant is in the "factions" category. There is no simple way to find all "medical" gear - you need to click through all the categories to find them... except for when you already know where all the items are, but that's just muscle memory cause we had categories for many years now. Tag-based makes it a ton easier to find specifically the items that you need. It may require 2 or 3 clicks to select the specific tags, but it requires much less scrolling, and less clicking through categories if you are not 100% sure where the item you want is, or even what exactly it is. With tags, there is now an easy way to find, for example, all "medical" items, or even specifically all "medical suits and overwear". Or if you want to see all the tajaran uniforms or clothing and the like, you don't want to scroll through many other tajaran items in-between that aren't uniforms/clothing. As for missing items or tags, or items with incorrectly assigned tags... If I don't see any bug reports, and no one pings me, then things will never be fixed. So yeah, please report bugs, either on github or ping me directly.
  11. The renames were being suggested because "XO" kind of implies it is 2IC, which it currently isn't, so a different name would be better instead that does not imply that. No need for a rename if XO actually becomes 2IC.
  12. I like this, and I think it'd be better than 2IC XO. "Executive Officer" is a very bad name for a position that is not actually 2IC.
  13. I agree with everything Sneaky said above this post, it is pretty much what I think but presented more eloquently. I think this is just your specific IRL experience. Who's to say it couldn't work differently in our in game universe? Why couldn't engineers do actual field work? At least in the case of spaceship engineers.
  14. I agree with this PR, and I do think this is a bugfix / fixing an unintentional oversight. Learner role age requirements should be consistent. It should be either that: - All learner roles should have low required age like engi apprentice. I don't like this, cause they're learner roles - intended for new players, and not for established characters to sit on the role for months or years. - Or all learner roles should be same age requirement as the actual non-learner role (or one year lower maybe, like warden needs to be 25 or older, but warden cadet can be 24). Engineering apprentice is the outlier here. Lab assistant IMO is fine as it is, cause I don't think it's really a learner role, but that's a bit off-topic here.
  15. I think the seven years for an engineer is fine. Engineers absolutely are not just "service technicians". Engineers have to know A LOT of different systems, and since we're a ship that can go places for a long time, they should be able to do more than just service these systems. Rebuild, optimize, rearrange, etc. Power, electrics, atmos, gravity generator, propulsion, sensors, and I'm probably forgetting a few things still. Our engineers should both be able to "tell you how fast water is leaking out of a pipe" and also "actually fix it for you". And in practice, they do both, with engineers commonly optimizing power and propulsion. If anything, I think higher requirements are good to avoid characters that are low-educated and/or young, but at the same time know all these systems and could rebuild whole horizon from scratch.
  16. Remove ling from secret, but add it to the uplink, same as psionics are. So ling is not effectively removed (which is what removing it from secret would do), but the rare traitor with the rare ling gimmick in mind could do it if they wish so. Of course it'd use up all TC so a traitor would have to commit to it. I think this would be nice. Ling as a gamemode is kinda bad, and I think traitor is one of the best and most flexible modes we have (same as merc).
  17. I retract my PR. Please close/lock this thread.
  18. This is absolutely false. You can vote, and not play. There are players who vote (or at least they claim they do) for dumb gamemodes just to troll the round, with no intention of actually playing it.
  19. I have opened up a PR to remove the meteor gamemode: https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/16986 (actually just make it unvotable in the gamemode vote, not fully remove). My reasoning is in the PR. Discuss, or something.
  20. Played a round or three with their CMO, and a round or three with their HoS, both as my XO. They've both been okay, involved in command stuff and the like. I didn't see any red-flags or nothing like that. +1 I guess
  21. I think lethality should be increased, in whichever and whatever way we try it. I can think of many situations where I'd be involved in a firefight or whatever, and even without armor, come out with minor injuries. A few days ago I'd got hit with a PEAC round, and basically just shrugged it off. I think I'd even say, I'm more afraid of falling down a elevator, or running out of air, than being shot at. (Though I rarely play security, so if I do get shot at, it's a hostage situation, or a stray bullet, or the like.) If anything, increased lethality would potentially make these bad situations less common. Especially the RP interruption part - if a shootout is lethal, it'll end quickly, and not drag out around the whole ship. Personally I'd also rather just die and watch the rest of the round as a ghost, rather than suffer the X minutes of surgery, and then Y minutes of recovery.
  22. I doubt these people actually exist and approach you with these things - and even if they do, that is irrelevant, as it is your private space, and not the actual community. Maybe you have used to be an active and positively impactful member of the community in the past, but in the public space in the current days, I only see you either: posting memes, engaging in short talks that are not related to SS13 or Aurora in the slightest (like cats or whatever), or engaging in these heated discussions that are the main point of this complaint. You can say a thousand times that your views are sincere, and you want Aurora to be better, and mention how many people you help in DMs. But if you yourself admit you do not actually play the game and only "experience" it through streams and hearsay, that is all irrelevant. As someone else in that discussion have said, "investment in the community is evidence of good intent". There is zero investment, so I do not think your "critique" of Aurora is provided in good intent.
  23. BYOND Key: my discord username: "dreamykass" Game ID: N/A Player Byond Key/Character name: their discord username: "porbo" Staff involved: A few days ago I have messaged Yonnimer with some sus messages of porbo, but other than that, staff and moderation commonly engage with porbo in the main discord. Like yesterday, Alberyk, and many others. So, staff should be familiar with porbo. Reason for complaint: Firstly. I've seen on many occasions porbo posting some sus or insane or borderline rule-breaking stuff. This is stuff that does not immediately deserve a ban, no, but it's hella weird, and I do not think it would be particularly welcoming for any new players to see when joining the server. They have already been striken for this in the past, search "mentions:porbo strike" in the main discord. See spoiler for some screenshots - I only have these, cause I'm not online all the time, I've only started saving these a few days ago, and porbo is active almost literally every single day, so I'd rather not be log scraping the 89 pages of their messages in the past month alone. Secondly. I have seen multiple conversations like these in the past, where porbo is wasting everyone's time, by bad-faith arguing, while at the same time admitting they do not even play the server, and showcasing complete lack of understanding how Aurora (community, lore, etc) looks like in the current day. On multiple occasions I have seen the general chat be tied up in these porbo conversations for hours, with people coming and going as they engage and try to defend against porbo's baseless accusations about the state of Aurora. Commonly porbo also shows this kind of "concern" for Aurora, where they claim they wish Aurora well. I do not believe it is genuine at all, and it is concern trolling. See spoiler for assorted screenshots from the conversation from yesterday. The problem is the whole conversation and how porbo engages with the discord server, and not the specific messages, and like I can't screenshot the whole conversation, can I? Here's link to somewhere in the middle of it yesterday: https://discord.com/channels/157516682288562176/157531783779319808/1123400115877576735 Thirdly. The reason for this complaint, is I believe porbo has a negative impact on the server and the community. Sure, I could just ignore or block them, but I still do not want to see *other* people wasting their time like that. Including new people who have just joined the server or whatever, and who get to see porbo going on a massive rant about how Aurora is awful and Aurora players are bad. Honestly, I genuinely believe, porbo is some elaborate scheme to troll us, waste everyone's time, shitpost on massive scale. It is genuinely baffling to me how they have not been banned yet, and how even admins engage in these "conversations" with porbo. Did you attempt to adminhelp the issue at the time?: N/A Approximate Date/Time: See screenshots above, but other than that, it's an ongoing situation, and not just a one-off incident.
  24. With my design, horizon's refinery would be untouched, so they could process a portion of the ore on the Spark, and the rest on Horizon.
