Whoever's designing those maint tunnels has the right idea. Floor grates to cover up the exposed cables and piping, dim red lights...this is definitely the vibe they should be giving off. Keep up the good work!

This map's gonna be a blast to roam through, I can tell. Also really liking the usage of floor grates and such to break up the floor tiles. One thing I would like to ask about, though, is how our interactions with the Spur will go throughout our varied and exciting adventures. Will it mostly be small-level stuff, recognizing the scope of even an individual planet, or will there be a lot more of making the ship "the most remarkable unremarkable ship in the Spur"? Personally, I feel the former will much better serve the setting and event plotting.

Insert Deus Ex Quote here: Brainstorming Corp-Specific Augs

Okay, so...this PR kind of solves most of the issues, at least for fluff augs. Guess this was a bit redundant, eh? -
Insert Deus Ex Quote here: Brainstorming Corp-Specific Augs
ImmortalRedshirt replied to ImmortalRedshirt's topic in General
Was kind of thinking that too, albeit with a bit more focus on fluff over mechanics. As for more fluff, here's one for Idris Social Assistance System A basic piece of neuroware, this augment provides live visual feedback on possible ways to improve your presentation and interactions. Quality of results may vary. -
make all zeng hu augments besides the faceplate not company specific
ImmortalRedshirt replied to Lmwevil's topic in Archive
Fuck it, let's try to solve this the cool way. -
I like augments, you like augments, we all like augments. Inspired by the rather interesting discussion over in the suggestions subforum, there's some interest in giving other companies their own unique augments that fit their theme, whether purely fluff or providing some mechanical difference. This post will attempt to serve as a place to keep track of potential ideas that could be added to the game if they fit and someone's willing to implement them.

Or at the very least, the memory and emotion augs shouldn't be Zheng-locked. Let other corps have a share of the dystopia! -
Get rid of passive regeneration healing on carbon mobs
ImmortalRedshirt replied to Scheveningen's topic in Archive
Medbay's gonna love it when I crawl up to them after an unfortunate KA misfire that they spend less than 10 seconds healing. Anyway, the concept's interesting, I'd have to see it in action to determine how I feel about it. Wonder if it would be possible to make the regen situational, like resting to heal minor wounds and pain, probably isn't, code-wise. -
Revert/Re-sprite the Advanced (CE) Hardsuit Sprite
ImmortalRedshirt replied to Ramke's topic in Archive
What made the original work was not that it was just Dead Space but in SS13, but that it was designed with a more "industrial" feel to it. This current one has that "everything is an Apple product in the future" aesthetic, but yellow, which across all sci-fi media, just doesn't feel very interesting. Plus, it hardly feels appropriate for a suit used for engineering to focus more on style than on actual practicality. The original looks purpose-built to fix stuff in any environment. This current one looks like in-universe marketing material to attract 20-somethings with expensive engineering degrees from Ceres University to working on this deathtrap of a station. Edit: No, this isn't insinuating that I just want the Dead Space sprite back. There's definitely something interesting that can be done with it that doesn't rip off RIGs or look like a yellower Apple product. -
I, too, was around Kelvin for a large portion of the round as miner Vera Chernikova. Without a doubt, I can confirm that much of the round was spent building up to Buck's eventual downfall. Providing a story for the entire station to enjoy when antagging can be difficult with antags on this scale, but they provided plenty of opportunities within their own department for interaction, which is a much more achievable goal. If any more evidence is required, the entire chat log from Vera's perspective is saved, and can be sent to any who request it through DMs.

DanseMacabre's Human Lore Deputy Application
ImmortalRedshirt replied to Kintsugi's topic in Developer Applications Archives
I and likely many others would like to believe this, but I worry that the end result may be more of the same. In addition to statements like the one in the image posted earlier, your response to certain posts has been lackluster, and in some cases non-existent. When asked about the "joke" from the aforementioned image, there was no response. When another user took the time to offer their feedback on your lore and behaviors, they were blocked and accused of harassment. Personally, I do not believe these are behaviors that should be exhibited during the feedback phase, much less from a full-fledged member of staff. It reflects poorly on the image of the rest of the team when a member's response to any feedback that could be considered slightly critical is to ignore it entirely. Open communication with people who have legitimate things to say is vital to being in a role such as this one. -
DanseMacabre's Human Lore Deputy Application
ImmortalRedshirt replied to Kintsugi's topic in Developer Applications Archives
I believe a mark of a good staff member is a willingness to discuss non-sensitive matters with complete transparency, and as such, I will be continuing the discussion here. As for my remarks on convention, it is a common practice in sci-fi to design worlds from the top-down, that is, with ultimately minimal regard for the culture, which as mentioned, is the core of what allows interesting characters to be created. What cultural aspects are present in such settings are often revolved around their minor habits and do not influence their views of other groups beyond their own planet(I cannot imagine the Homesteader-Urbanite divide affecting a character's interactions with non-Visegradians, for example). This is the impression I get from the planets posted within this application. In addition, while basing a planet off of an already existing Earth culture is a common practice and one I approve of in most situations, it must be allowed to be shaped by the circumstances of the future society. Sometimes, stepping away from the most realistic path is what makes a sci-fi setting truly resonate in the minds of the audience. The question this brought up in my head is why you'd make such a joke in the first place, where it could be seen by people who would feel it's in poor taste and a direct indictment against who they are. And I do believe it is extremely relevant to this application. As a lore deputy, you are part of the staff, and this means that you are one of the faces of what this community is. Does it reflect well on the server as a whole when a staff member is known for saying things such as this? -
DanseMacabre's Human Lore Deputy Application
ImmortalRedshirt replied to Kintsugi's topic in Developer Applications Archives
Right off the bat, I will admit that there is a clear passion put into your worldbuilding, and the commitment to detail is present in all parts on a level that would make a hard sci-fi writer intimidated. However, what detail cannot always provide is a compelling hook, something that would make a character from their stand out and be interesting to play and to interact with. While other elements of Aurora lore are not completely guilt free in this regard, planets like Visegrad play conventional sci-fi tropes rigidly straight, and I personally cannot see how a character from such a world could express a distinct behavior beyond their name and small mannerisms, like common phrases and cuisine. Now, the question is "Red, why aren't you putting this in the Visegrad app's feedback?" The answer to this is that this is intended to set up a concern I have over possible additions and changes. Extrapolating from the writing on display here, I anticipate an adherence to sci-fi convention and the ever-nebulous standard of "realism." Human lore is very grounded in our reality, allowing it to be more relevant and to let us create more compelling characters based on its connection. At the same time, the lore often delves into unpredictable, implausible, and interesting areas, whether it's Assunzione's most peculiar behaviors, Crosk's aviation-dominated society, or Medina's phoron bulletin. These quirks create fantastic hooks for characters to be based on. I cannot have confidence that such an approach would be taken to your two major areas of interest, those being the timeline and Coalition rework. Both certainly can and should be in a better position, but if the same approach was taken to these as to, say Visegrad, it's likely that both would fall in line with the common tropes and not feel all that distinctive. On a closing note, I will take a moment to address the closing notes of the original post. We all have a "somewhat opinionated nature", and yet, I cannot describe the following image as being "somewhat" opinionated and frankly, I feel it sets an undesirable precedent for members of our staff team, who should be held to a high standard of scrutiny and civility. -
I'm not sure if it's possible to make verbs apply on an accent-by-accent basis, but I feel there is a strong case for having it be the case for specific groups like Vysokan accent users, because the game says their dialect is much harsher than Xanite Freespeak. The color PR does fix the readability issue that came from this decision, though.

While I do not support this suggestion at all, I'd like to point out that this post was made during said round with the roundstart traitor AI, instead of immediately following the round. The rules state that players must "avoid discussing events of the current round in OOC", and while the round has long since passed, the presence of a traitor AI was an event in the round, and this forum is an OOC means of public communication.

Tish Nagata - Light Spacer Magboots
ImmortalRedshirt replied to Jessica_Stark's topic in Denied Apps
Pretty neat idea, scarcity and limitations keep some semblance of balance, but honestly, I just really like anything to do with offworlders. -
-1 across the board, including removal for ghosts. I see no reason everyone should get a potentially useful tool removed because a few easily dealt with people clog it up, especially since the two other methods of reaching out to a player out of character, those being Global OOC and Discord, are unreliable for different reasons.
-
This still neglects the four other methods I mentioned besides TTS circuits. Almost every room in science has paper and writing utensils, everyone has a PDA, anyone who designs a mute character properly gives them sign language, heck, even multiple characters who can speak know sign as well. Robotics is a very safe job compared to their bretheren in the rest of the department finding new and innovative ways to burn the entire station down. Situations where they would have to call out an emergency by speaking over the radio usually only ever happen during Secret, with threats that NT couldn't possibly predict occurring.
-
Not sure how I feel about the speech requirement in Science. On this server, we have multiple alternatives to speaking, including, but not limited to: Writing PDA messages Integrated Electronics Emotes for more basic things Two sign languages I personally believe a scientist or roboticist character could get away with some of the more severe levels if they knew what they were doing.

Wait, I'm confused. Don't voidsuits get in the way of hardhats?
-
Throwing in my support for this one, too. Would make it easier for antags who'd like to do something based on exploitables but don't want to spend however many minutes sifting through blank after blank.

Pic tangentially related. Context: This was Bughunt. Borer took up residence in Safaa and was willing to leave in exchange for someone else volunteering to take it in.

This is a rather irritating problem that I've seen crop up again and again. Most of the time, when a camera receives actual damage, it will send out a camera alarm. This is good, it lets you know where there's a problem. The issue is that even when you repair the camera, the alarm won't clear. And some, like the one in the bomb testing range, can't be accessed easily. As a result, you now have a red light on the alarm console that will never go away. To alleviate this problem, I suggest that engineers should be given the ability to clear a camera alarm from the alarm console.

Feedback thread - final hardsuit resprite
ImmortalRedshirt replied to kyres1's topic in Completed Projects
Alright, second try! So, as said before, I really like how "industrial" the hazard and EVA suits look(I especially like how the visor thing looks on the former), this very clearly is some top-notch work. I think the CE's suit needs a bit of touching up, though. I get that it's supposed to be the more high-tech option, naturally, has all the fancy gear and such to make you feel like an engineering god. However, with its current color, it gets really close to the regular engineering suit in appearance. With the current sprites, you see the white hardsuit in a low-light environment(like half the breaches we patch up because we keep all our welding tanks in maint for some ungodly reason), you can instantly go "Yep, that's the Chief right there." With this current color, you have to spend a moment trying to determine "Is it the Chief, or just a regular engineer?" I'm not sure if you were originally going for white, but it could seem like a good color to differentiate the two while still preserving the shiny. As for the hardhat, my point still stands. It feels like a rather silly thing to add and doesn't feel as grounded as the other two I've brought up. The rest of the suit looks plenty "sleek", the design of the helmet just makes it fall flat, and I'd honestly pick wearing the regular EVA suit over this one any time, no matter the mechanical advantages. Plus, everyone knows engineers are never meant to wear anything looking like a hardhat after spawning in! Maybe try removing the "brim" and adjusting the shape of the visor so that it still keeps a unique look?
