Sorry man, you can sit on this awhile. Honestly it seems like you knew this was going to happen and it seems like your goal was to spoil the game for as many people as possible. Appeal denied.

I think the issue of "lag" is a very high priority one considering if you play during a canon event you have an explicit risk of losing your character. On principle I am against playtime requirements or taking us off the hub because I believe new players to be the lifeblood of our community. I think there exists a possibility in which i would be willing to compromise on the latter in service to the former. I am however ignorant as to the specific server causes of the lag and what if any solutions we can implement. I would appreciate @Arrow768's insight on the matter as he is our head developer.

Make the Executive Officer the ship's second in command.
Garnascus replied to Kintsugi's topic in Suggestions & Ideas
I have never played any of my command characters during NBT so i am not entirely sure how the current hierarchy works. Reading the wiki is all well and good but... what does the executive officer do now? Is the role hampered by not being able to order command around? -
Freshrefreshments - Garnascus staff complaint.
Garnascus replied to FreshRefreshments's topic in Staff Complaints Archive
You took it upon yourself to post spoilers for the game in OOC chat. A game that has not even been officially released yet. I am not entertaining the discussion of rowling's political views and it does not justify your naïve activism. A staff complaint should not be what you are making. I invite my team to disbar me if they feel i am in error here. You can appeal this at your leisure. You should be ashamed of yourself. EDIT I admit my emotions are running high over this. As such i was unnecessarily authoritarian in my first post. I apologize. however the remaining content of this post stands. -
I think it is ok for our lore to work with themes like this. While i do agree that lore like this DOES tend to attract certain types of unsavory people i do not think the lore of the SRF warrants us pumping the breaks. I trust our lore team to handle the themes responsibly. Our lore has a lot of conflicting factions and ideologies. The Unathi alone have a WEALTH of doctrinal disputes. I completely understand the sentiment of not wanting to mess with the themes of fascism at all and i do think it is something we need to treat VERY CAREFULLY.

View Own Admin Notes verb/discord command
Garnascus replied to Sniblet's topic in Policy Suggestions
I was trying to explain why a player would ever want their notes to begin with and then i segued. I suppose if i am being honest i am not 100% against the idea of a "view notes" button. We've done things the same way for so long with a great deal of success though so i am resistant to change. I would need to be totally sure the benefits are there and i do not think i am. Like i have said 99.9% of the time when you get bwoinked by a staff member you get a note. Not a single note on anyone's account should be a surprise. -
View Own Admin Notes verb/discord command
Garnascus replied to Sniblet's topic in Policy Suggestions
So myself and alberyk will generally give out screenshots of notes to anyone who asks with the explicit stipulation that any notes you see are not up for debate. The reason being imagine you have 30 notes and you ask for screenshots to open up a staff complaint about each of them. Such a system is unsustainable and would be impossible to maintain due to the insane amount of work required. I think it is reasonable for players to want to see their notes because you want to know your "standing" in regards to "how close am i to being banned?". I think communication on how our punishment system works could alleviate most of these concerns if not all of them. I think assuming the player knows how it works they would have a good intuitive understanding of "how close am i to getting banned?". I will briefly explain that system below. While it is theoretically possible to be bwoinked for ancillary things (I need your testimony you are not in trouble) most people get bwoinked either because they have done something wrong or are suspected of having done something wrong. If the ahelp determines you did indeed do something wrong we need to examine your history. In the list i detail shortly assume the player is playing in reasonably good faith, not a malicious griefer and for some reason has a hard time following the rules. I will detail various staff actions and the reasoning behind them. 1st action. Note. You have been told by a staff member explicitly not to do something. It may be exceedingly minor like calling an officer shitcurity(lrp terms) or it might be serious (you cut someones arm off during surgery by accident). In either case you will be informed what you did wrong and directed on how to proceed in the future (if it was an accident). Keep in mind it is possible to accrue A LOT of notes before you ever move up on the punishment scale. The reason being is we look for PATTERNS of behavior. If you call someone shitcurity, accidentally cut off someones arm learning medical or afk as a single slot role then all of these could receive a simple note because there is probably no real pattern of behavior we need to try to address. 2nd action. A Warning This is our "bread and butter" because this one is actually visible to you as a player. You also have to read and acknowledge it before you can continue playing the game. A warning is placed when we notice in your note history that you have been told to not do a particular thing and have done it again. So maybe you called security officers shitcurity a few times and received some notes. You did it again and now you receive a warning. Again, like with notes it is technically possible to accrue a couple of warnings over various unrelated areas before you ever get temp banned. Most players including myself have a couple of these. 3rd action. The tempban You done goofed now. You have called officer barney shitcurity once again despite a note and a warning telling you not to. You did not alter your behavior so we are faced with the unfortunate decision of barring you from the game server temporarily. The ban system asks us to set the ban time in "minutes". Why? Nobody knows but we keep it simple here. 99.9% of bans fall are either 1 day, 3 days or a full week. If you get a temp ban and you have a consistent pattern of the offending behavior your temp ban will be a little longer (up to a week) and if its more mild but still a pattern it might only be a day. As an example using LRP terms a third time here would probably just be a 24 hour ban. As with notes and warnings it is theoretically possible to accrue a couple of different temp bans related to various things. You will GENERALLY see a much smaller frequency of this occurring however. 3.5 action. The jobban Exactly the same logic as a temp ban except here the behavior is SPECIFICALLY relegated to a particular role. Maybe you have a consistent pattern of being supremely awful security? Brigging people for no reason, breaking peoples arms, using lethals on crew by "accident". Jobbans are exactly what they sound like and generally follow our punishment hierarchy logic. 4th action. The permaban Do not pass go. Do not collect 200$. You have a CONSISTENT pattern of the offending behavior now. You have TIME AND TIME AGAIN called officer barney shitcurity, you have broken the immersion of the round by joining as JOHN CENA and JOHN SEX and a handful of temp bans and warnings where not enough to stop you. All we can do at this point is permanently ban you from the community. Important things to consider 1. I said at the start that this chart assumes an average player. A player not joining our server specifically to grief. If we identify you as a griefer you skip the line and go right to permaban land. It is NOT EASY to get this classification. You would have to join the server and spam the n word, detonate a bunch of max caps for the lulz or maybe you're just a lowly chef trying to make a living with other peoples shoes... 2. With regards to permabans there is still hope. You can appeal the permaban on our forums and briefly explain why you wont make the same mistakes again. The staff member who banned you will review it and if it is your first permaban almost always unban you. The first permaban is extremely easy to appeal and the second permaban is almost impossible to appeal. Our logic is that if you have gotten to the point of being permabanned and you can be assed to make an appeal then you might be able to play here and follow the rules. If we extended that olive branch to you once and you got permabanned AGAIN well....you're not coming back. We do not ever unban people and put them on "thin-ice". That is to say we do not unban people with the stipulation "if you mess up once you're permabanned again". It is a practice i forbid among the team because it sets people up for failure. 3.This chart is generally regarded as a rule of thumb among staff, not written in stone. It is theoretically possible to "jump" punishment tiers but those are case by case example and require some more justification. The offending behavior has generally caused more harm to justify the increase. That was a lot and i dont blame you if you dont read any of it. The TLDR here is if you ever get "noted" a staff member has 99.9% of the time approached you and told you not to do something. Warnings are visible to the player as are bans (I think?). -
1 dismissal Enforce a character limit on the Complaints Board
Garnascus replied to niennab's topic in Policy Suggestions
I have made exactly TWO contributions to the complaints forum to attempt to resolve this issue. One of them is a guide and one of them is an actual rule. You can view the rules at the top of the page of the complaints board. The second is a guide i made a while ago and it is viewable as a stickied thread in the staff complaints forum. Rules as written we are technically completely within our right to lock and archive a thread due to it being larger than two paragraphs. In pactice it is just bad optics. If you're already annoyed enough to go and make a complaint you're just going to get more annoyed if someone locks your thread and tells you to "lower the word count". Sure, we can do that and we can say "its the players responsibility to be concise" all we want but it just adds more time to the overall process and then we still have a complaint to look into either way so.... we just read through it despite the length and move forward. -
Voting for removal. Interested to see what the community as a whole thinks. I kind of want to just remove them right now but first i have to figure out where the option is. What do you think @Alberyk

Hello yeahchris. I am Garn! I have the distinct honor of being one of two current headmins for Aurora and i have done so for many years now (Oh god im getting old). I joined the team back when skype was still used for staff coordination and for some reason I stuck around. I heard your name mentioned many times by skull at the time. Whenever we would consider a particular point of administration or have a topic for discussion your name would get cited a lot. Generally in a "This is what was intended do we still want to do it this way?" kind of way. We've ported to a brand new map with ship controls, fancy artillery, away sites and ancillary ships roaming around space. Our server is pretty stable nowadays thanks to our excellent team. Skipping rounds when needed is sound advice. Over the years i have observed many unfortunate cases where people use aurora as their SOLE source of social interaction. The server ends up becoming a replacement for the support structures all of us have in real life. I do not think that is healthy and i do think some of us ought try to spend more time with loved ones.

Player Complaint - RacheI/Titus Boromand
Garnascus replied to Zulu0009's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
Ehh, not really a big deal all things considered. All of the things posted in this thread are very minor issues. Try to ahelp and ask for help on lore stuff before you add them to your backstory and its probably a good idea to remove the OOC messages in them. -
Player Complaint - RacheI/Titus Boromand
Garnascus replied to Zulu0009's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
It is really difficult for me to figure out the specific issues in this complaint. I see some logs posted of the player being mildly passive aggressive in OOC and a couple strange things in their bio. All of these things could be handled with a very simple ahelp. I also see lots of opinions being posted with zero evidence backing them up which amounts to very little in the realm of actionable information. Do we have issues with their OOC conduct and their IC conduct then? -

Actions have been doled out. This complaint is now resolved. Locking and archiving. -
@Spartan2548 Sure, unbanned. Make sure you read our rules too when you get a chance. We are a heavy RP server so we can be pretty strict as far as what your character is allowed to do. If that appeals to you you're welcome to stay. If not that is fine too. Either way the ban is so old there is no reason to think twice about this.

Alrighty, so just an update on all of this. TLDR is i see no reason to punish the HoS for anything he has done and i have discussed this issue at length with fellow staffmembers on our staff discord. If the HoS tells you not to grab a gun and you grab a gun anyway you are going to get shot. End of discussion. Ose was given a chance to surrender after being shot and he did not. Ose instigated this situation by grabbing a gun and not following the HoS's orders. The fact that the HoS responded with justified lethal force does NOT give any crew the right to shoot the HoS and everyone involved in shooting the HoS is probably going to have some action taken against them. @Drooling Cowboy There is a universe where taking a gun from the armory despite the HoS's order is an acceptable IC action. This would depend on the severity of the ghosts attacking the ship. It is almost impossible for me to actually determine how bad the situation was just from logs. You where incredibly verbally aggressive during your prison sentence, you did threaten the HoS and all of security, you did take a lethal weapon when ordered not to, you where given more than once chance to surrender as @Flpfs screenshots show. Whatever "the line" is for rulebreaking character behavior you are DEFINITELY on it and you may even be over it. @Axton_Wake As i explained in my previous post I think your actions where fine. You definitely displayed the nuances of IPC behavior here by "swiping away" your emotions and doing your job. @Minzeyes Attacking the HoS was absolutely inappropriate. When a member of the crew antagonizes security and forces a particular response you cannot use that as justification to kill them. Action will be taken against you @MadMurky Based on your own testimony you saw @Minzeyes character fire upon the HoS and the HoS returned fire. The HoS defended themselves against emma pessic and you shot them for it. Completely unnaceptable and the Ohse situation starting this all does not justify you shooting the HoS either. Action will be taken against you. @La Villa Strangiato As i understand it you did not shoot the HoS at all and only refused to treat him later. Your character is a pharmacist and generally there isnt really an expectation for pharmacists to treat people. You make medicines and maybe have first aid training but thats about it. Our team as a whole takes a very dim view of any player who refuses to do their job for any reason, you need a really good reason it since our entire server relies on various crew doing their jobs at all times. I think you have a reason here so i do not feel action needs to be taken against you. I am not listing the specific action taken against people because its going to depend on various note/warnings/ban histories and this complaint would go on for another week if i waited to do all of that. -

Garnascus replied to La Villa Strangiato's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
So based on @Axton_Wake's post here it seems he did all he could to try and treat you. Do you have any issues with his post? I will say that at the very least "hanging out with the corpse" is actually totally reasonable if it was someone you cared about deeply and if its true he made a good effort attempt to treat you then its completely his character's prerogative. -

I just don't buy it, frankly. We never have this discussion during any of the 12 horrendously violent merc rounds we have a week. We never have this discussion during any of Alb's or the lore teams events when they get violent. Hell this round itself had ghosts flying around breaking stuff and i certainly do not see any character in this thread justifying not doing their job because of it. It is theoretically possible for your character to reasonably roleplay being unable to do their job for X reasons but it seems to be so rarely and inconsistently applied in our community it makes me question it. I'm not necessarily saying either of you are breaking rules (you and the IPC). I don't know and this is only a small part of this overall complaint. This is even more of a reason to not involve yourself. If none of your characters have the context for an order the HoS is giving then you dont interfere. Disallowing certain crew members from accessing the crew armory IS the HoS's call to make. Full stop. If you disobey that order the consequences are on your character. You dont have the right to rear end someone and then complain that they stopped. -

Garnascus replied to La Villa Strangiato's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
Discussed this with a lot of staff on discord. The general consensus is this, the HoS absolutely had the right to shoot @Drooling Cowboy and kill him given the circumstances. If a head of security orders you not to pick up a lethal firearm and you do it anyway you are getting shot. End of discussion. This does not give any crew the right to involve themselves in the situation and attack the HoS and i am currently looking through logs to get a better picture. The HoS gave Ohse multiple chances to surrender and ohse did not. You are not permitted to involve yourself in security situations like this. I am personally not keen on medical players EVER refusing to treat people regardless of the circumstances. Its the same as killing someone because you're literally letting them die in my mind. That being said i understand being incredibly grief-stricken over your girlfriend having just been killed. EVEN IF your girlfriend was in the wrong i dont know how reasonable it is to expect your character to act totally rational in that situation. As far as refusing to treat someone who killed someone you where friendly with....frankly, its your JOB to treat crew. It is a server rule that your character must be able to perform your job to an acceptable standard. We really cannot have medical players picking and choosing who they treat because their friend was just killed by the janitor or someone else in the crew. Treat them, cuff them even and then hand them off to security so they can be tried and investigated for any wrong doings. -

Will read this over later today. So if i am tracking correctly nobody involved was an antag? Does not immediately make anyone guilty. -
Sorry for the late response. Was not aware this existed. My fault. Anyways, warning seems justified to me. Alb is correct that event volunteers are held to a higher standard due to the potential to really mess up a lot of work people put in to run events. A warning is exactly that "Hey you should not do this please dont do this again".

No, sorry man. Stuff like this is wildly inappropriate and essentially ensures you can never be unbanned. You will need to find some place else to play unfortunately.
