BurgerBB Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 Nearly every other round there is always an antag who makes it their gimmick to make fueltank bombs, or when being chased by security, they detonate fuel tanks by shooting it once. This is excessively annoying for security and engineering, and the fuel tank explosion itself is not realistic behavior. In reality, shooting a fuel tank will not make it explode. The most that would happen would be a fireball, even if the fuel tank was oxygenated to allow use in space, but if the fuel was this oxygenated then it wouldn't work in environments with air, so the only realistic explanation here is that the welder has its own oxygen supply The behavior that should happen with everything considered is that the fuel tank bursts and sprays ignited fuel everywhere. I made a PR a long time ago to do this behavior, but I did not remove the explosive element because of babysteps. Given that it's been 6+ months since that PR, and the resulting annoyance from security, medical, and engineering, I think it's time to remove the explosion it causes.
KingOfThePing Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 Fuel tank explosions are super aids and should be removed for the reasons stated. It has absolutely zero (0) value to keeping it. Not only it's unrealistic, it's just plain unfun.
Nantei Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Fuel tank explosions are pretty tame most of the time. The way fuel tank explosions are done has to be done pretty deliberate. Shooting to explode them isn't very realistic, but fuel tank bombs are definitely something that would happen.

They're annoying to cleanup and repair because they don't actually ignite the fuel and even when they do, there is still some leftover. Also with the bug that is asteroid turf venting, they can vent several hallways with their explosion. Edited December 17, 2019 by BurgerBB
Scheveningen Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 i dont have a job as atmos tech if explosions don't happen on a somewhat uncommon basis

This suggestion would give engineers less to do but atmos techs more to do.
BurgerBB Posted December 17, 2019 Author Posted December 17, 2019 I literally was the one who coded in fuel tanks leaking their fuel when shot. I was the one who made it a part of the game, and now I'm saying it isn't a good idea and seeing if people agree. I'm pretty sure my opinion carries some weight here.
Lady Fowl Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/7711 A bit better alternative instead of outright removing fuel tanks explosions
Doxxmedearly Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Regarding the PR, wouldn't it make sense to have laser weaponry trigger an explosion almost always?
N8-Toe Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 I'm fully against this. fuelbombs give antags an option for destruction, as well as creating content for engineering. removing this is nerfing antags and taking content away from engineering/med because its inconvenient for security.
Alberyk Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 I am also very against this. Maybe reduce the number of welding tanks around. But, their explosion has a purpose, and can be used to create escapes or just robust people.
Nantei Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Shooting welding tanks doesn't make much sense. Purposely igniting them does. I don't see an issue with making it so they don't sodomize turfs as badly as they do, especially with how asteroid turfs hoover up air now.
Shenaanigans Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 I just like watching security accidentally shoot a tank with a laser and immediately turn to a pile of organs.
Seeli Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 -1 I see your points, but I disagree. Shooting around a fuel tank should be something that people are afraid of.
Gangstafary Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Not supporting, besides my personal reasons for that, this fad of removing everything that may cause the slightest inconvenience is, like we say in my mother tongue, like trying to kill flies with cannonguns.
Hendricks Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 -1 I have seen a rogue bullet hit a tank and light up the entirety of surface cargo and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed. Specially since it was a missed shot at a spider.
Arrow768 Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Voting for dismissal for the reason mentioned above. If something should be done its a reduction of the number of fuel tanks around.
Gangstafary Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 ^Probably that, although finding a good balance so a couple of welderbombs don't make it so difficult for someone in need of a refill to find one might be hard.
