greenjoe Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 (edited) So my suggestion is for a port of this PR from bay: https://github.com/Baystation12/Baystation12/pull/30895 . Or at least, the part of it that does the character scaling, along with porting the part where you can choose if your character is shorter/taller and thinner/thicker then average. These would allow for more character customization, and would let characters visibly be different heights to each other, it could be combined with different settings for different species to make them visibly different heights, as they are in lore. greenjoe Posted July 4, 2021 Author Posted July 4, 2021 (edited) EDIT: As the bay values were disliked, I've posted values from nebula further down in this post. To add on to it, here are some examples from Bay from left to right: Very short with average build Tall with average build Very tall with average build Average height and heavily built Very short and rail thin Very tall and heavily built Very tall and rail thin The numbers for the scaling can be adjusted for us, if we want anything to be different Edited July 14, 2021 by greenjoe
Omicega Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 I'm not a fan of this at all, having seen both the previews and how it looks in the actual game itself on Baystation. Thin characters look especially weird, but even the height variations end up making characters look weirdly stretched or squished.
Butterrobber202 Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 I support this solely on the basis that Skrell are going to look hilarious
NewOriginalSchwann Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 While I've always been a proponent of a height slider menu this is, in my opinion, not something we should bother porting. Sprites look weird and squished, with short characters looking especially weird. A lot of the sprite accessories/clothes/etc. seem not to change very well with the size slider earlier, and shirt accessories (which most people use, I imagine) end up looking like extra-large shirts on short characters. It's not great.
Caelphon Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 Going to have to agree with the above. Remove the sprite adjusting, and just implement a "examine feature" which tells you whether they are smaller/taller than you, or if they are average for that species.
Desven Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 The only thing I dislike is that everyone seems to have something for making their character giants. Right now I can ignore the FT of the Sol girl that's somehow 6'7", but if the height system was implemented we would see really tall characters everywhere.
Scheveningen Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 On one hand, the sprites shown in the PR look comically demonstrated, on the other hand they're also eerily horrifying. In seriousness that degree of execution doesn't look like anything I'd want to see in terms of character differentiation on this server.
WickedCybs Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 It starts to look really goofy looking when the build options are showcased. Overall, not a fan. Porting the examine feature is cool though.
Carver Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 I'd enjoy this just to giggle at sub-6' characters who set their visual height to 'average' or even 'tall'.
greenjoe Posted July 14, 2021 Author Posted July 14, 2021 alright seeing as the main complaint was about the scaling values, I'll now show off values from Nebula, which has some better selected values this does it better then the values on bay, so tell me what your thoughts are here.
Desven Posted July 14, 2021 Posted July 14, 2021 Yes, this looks much better made and I like it. The tall one is a bit weird, but the small one looks really good.
Wigglesworth Jones Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 I'm personally not a fan of sprite scaling, although I wouldn't mind the height descriptors.

I don't hate how this looks.
KingOfThePing Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 Its pretty alright. With everything new, you have to get used to it for a bit.
Scheveningen Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 I'm open to a wide variety of things, but, even with Nebula's take on it, I am not too sure how I feel about it. My immediate initial response to the image shown is trying to suppress the urge to make fun of the variation in spaceman physique, especially since I am just as mentally scarred from how certain other servers do it. It would be particularly difficult to take seriously, I feel. And another thing is how it would be handled in regards to the extremes. Like, in terms of how players have a tendency to make their character unique, I am concerned just how unique certain characters would be over others. It is enough that Dominians and Unathi can get upwards to 7ft tall, but I hope making a dwarf is not equally as possible, otherwise I would cry everytime I saw one in-game.

Yeah you can't really make a dwarf The character on the left of the picture is the smallest you can go
