Coder Application - TheGreyWolf
Desven replied to TheGreyWolf's topic in Developer Applications Archives
He has earned a green name. I can't thank Grey enough for all he's done for me. -
The library should probably have a light switch again where everybody can toggle the lights. It was annoying when the current one didn't have it, as a librarian isn't always there.

More surgery room seething: I really don't understand why a sterile area would have maintenance doors. Not sure how the maintenance area looks from there, but the cold storage could be behind.
-
Actually, tall is probably the hardest. I've spent a lot of time looking at the examples; the wall is taller than 32 pixels, so it's higher than the player and items. You have to create a transparency effect when next to it. It's possible at the moment, but janky.

Two new PRs in the same spirit: https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/12428 Jukeboxes https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/12430 Lockers Not exactly sure about the future of walls and such. I've discussed this a lot with 50n00b and others, and I think the infra/tall walls look the best. What I don't like about slate walls is that they look weird sideways.

This is something I hadn't considered before. It's hard to escape the whole “Sol Republic/Alliance/democracy whatever” name, but next to that, Tau Ceti Republic sounds like one of the most generic sci-fi names. Tau Ceti is probably one of the most popular sci-fi places and Biesel keeps it fresh and the most unique. If Biesel is already somewhat generic (something we have been looking for change), Tau Ceti Republic would make it even more bland.
-
Probably not adding much other than I oppose skill sets if they handicap you. A player should stay on their lane, but fucking up surgery or something because you didn't choose max skills isn't fun.
-
Not a huge fan of the OR tables being so far from the surgical table. Also, I'm guessing the crate is the blood freezer. I kind of like the current cold storage room, though I can see that there may be less room for that, but I think having the two ORs connected is a good idea. How does the room look like with the windows tinted? The current ORs had to have another light added because the lightbulbs are really dim. Are they super dark again?

It's not uncommon for centralized places to have their name after their biggest city, or even almost synonymous. Besides New Gibson, which is kind of stale lore, nothing much is going on in Tau Ceti in terms of big planets. It used to be called PUB, probably after republic too. I think BSL fits really good. The whole place is called Republic of Biesel, after all, and that's the flag of the republic.

I have a cloned Captain, but I believe cloning should be removed from lore altogether.

I updated the battlemonsters machine to match ours. Will upload a pic later.

Yeah. It's up to you, at the end. -
[Accepted] Caelphon's Vaurca Application
Desven replied to Caelphon's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Sounds good. The only note I have is that the character might work better as directly from C'thur (or rather, one of her surrogates). Each Hive has the quirky history/museum brood, and C'thur's realm is trying to achieve that. If you want to explore isolation, C'thur is also a better brood for this, since the biggest chunk of them are still at Diulzi. -
Just as an addition, here are the arcade sprites. As far as ugly sprites go, I think the current ones arcades are the biggest offender.

[Accepted] Caelphon's Vaurca Application
Desven replied to Caelphon's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Hi, thank you for applying. I have some questions and some observations. 1. Just as a note, Zo'ra probably had multiple Hiveships, but only one of each Hive has arrived to the Spur. It's a small clarification. 2. Could you please expand a bit on how these cultural differences that set Vaurcae apart from humans? 3. I'm guessing Arv landed as a historian guide, which is fair because not everyone can be employed in the universities or research institutes. Does it resent its peers because of this? 4. As far as I know, Mouv has no beef with the modern pantheon. Some may dislike it, seeing it as a Zo'ra invention. In all broods but Vetju, however, those opinions would be on an individual scale. I'm not too sure this could cause such ostracism. 5. There's a big jump as to when Vioux arrives to Biesel. Was it relocated to the Traverse? Also, as Lordnesh pointed, this would likely mean Arv has been disconnected from the Hive as a whole. I'm still not 100% sure what would be our policy when it comes to C'thur refugees, but most likely they would reconnect with the rest of the Hive that's stationed at Tau Ceti. How would Vioux react to this re-encounter? 6. Seeing that Arv has had bad experiences with the Federation, what does it think of Skrell and Jargon as a whole? 7. Just a bonus: Arv seems to be old enough to have lived through the events of the Warbling, how did it affect it; especially with its job situation? Good luck. -
Hello, thanks for applying. Just some observations and questions. 1. Just a heads up, the name is Vaurca. In the body of your application, you use Vaucra. Just be careful around that. 2. Could you please expand a bit on what is different when playing a Vaurca? More of what you think it'd be rather than just what you can find on the wiki. 3. It's a bit unclear on what Vioux did the first years. Were they a kataphract or some kind of Unathi researcher? Just to keep in mind, since as you said, they have a purpose and job when born, so that is somewhat important. 4. As another point, as of now in-lore the Vaurca-Aut'akh relationship is in-the-shadows at best, and null at worst. What I mean is that keep in mind that Vioux would probably find these thoughts about Aut'akh as something personal, or just as a Zumok sympathizer (and maybe even disciple). Zumok gets away with its opinion because of its Xakat'kl'atan status, but a regular Vaurca being too open about this might be troublesome for both Vedhra and their Hegemony arrangement. 5. Being a follower of Preimminence, how does Vioux relate to other broods, and more particularly, other Hives? Good luck.

rejected [Closed] Phaseus - IPC 'Race' Application
Desven replied to Phaseus's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I wholly agree with Danse. Besides the obvious issues with sexualized content, your application makes zero mention of our IPC lore. You said it yourself that other races require reading the wiki, but IPCs do too, and robots here are unique than in other sci-fi settings. Please review the IPC wiki pages. -
So I have two PRs that wish to update the vending machine sprites, as well as the arcade ones. They have been deemed controversial because they allegedly don't fit the Aurora style. I've argued against that here. In short; I think the current ones are really ugly and outdated, but I also find them clashing with the rest of the newer sprites (either made by some of us or ported from elsewhere), such as the gas tanks. An example is here, which shares the same top-down perspective the sprites I'm trying to port does. Current in game vs my PR. As you can see, the current ones don't fit their surroundings. Most examples are available there. For those too lazy to open Github, here's a picture of some other vendors: I'm posting this on the forums because this way the broader community can give their opinions on the project. They're not 1 for 1 ports. I've tweaked many of them to fit our schemes and also designed the Zo'ra vendor. I've added animations for vending or just for how the machine looks when idle. I think it's fair to assume that all bar the the Battlemonsters one look just like an upgraded version of themselves. If this is too much of a problem, I can always recolor the Battlemonsters vendor to purple. (The sec machine when vending an item). In short, should I just drop it? Do you find the perspective of these machines too problematic or not in line with the server? How would you suggest the vending machines to be updated then? UPDATE: this got merged, I have new 3/4 projects now. This is the place to discuss such.

[Accepted] RyverStyx - Vaurca Application
Desven replied to RyverStyx's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Hi, thanks for applying. I'll ask a few questions and make some notes. 1. Could you please expand on what makes playing a Vaurca different from human? Try not to list mechanical differences. 2. Mek, being a year and a half, is already old enough to have worked on a previous job. I don't think the Aurora can receieve any “fresh” Vaurcae that have just finished their training in VR. If possible, then it would be something Zo'ra does, but not K'lax. Did it work elsewhere before? 3. Feeling that close to Zkaii and Mother K'lax, the physical distance from Zkaii and the rest of its brood may be hard for Mek. How is it dealing with this, and does it resent being shipped to Tau Ceti? 4. Could you please clear and expand what you mean with its faith and the Sk'akh missionaries? Have they made any breakthroughs in preachment, and what would Mek argue with them? 5. Viax aren't discriminated in the human understanding. They are seen as tools, and barely alive. You mention how it is passive and reserved, how would Mek treat other species? Good luck. -
Please keep in mind that current distribution is also to allow all species in each department. Removing NT from medical deletes all Tajara characters, for example.

Everything I wanted to say regarding departments I've said it privately with other staff, so I just want to say again that I think that for NBT that contractor uniforms should be laxed. First of all, everyone will be a contractor in a way and NT wouldn't have the same privileges it currently does. But it also kills a lot of loadouts, especially since in some departments you'd be forced to wear your uniform only. Not that I think everyone should treat the ship like casual Friday, but loadouts are cool and we have a lot of dressing options. Secutity should still be required to wear their uniform the whole time though.

I like it. The kitchen is great. The problem I see with the chapel is the same it has at the moment, the light switch beeing too far from the entrance. Maybe an extra one near the door would be nice, especially since sometimes people just like to enter and talk. As for the kitchen, that dark corner could use an extra lightbulb. The server lights are way too dim.

[Accepted] Hawkington becomes bugge
Desven replied to Hawk's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Hello, thank you for applying. I will ask you some questions. 1. I would like for you to provide a different answer for the 'What makes Vaurca different' question. The reason being that while yes, all of those are important differences, the questions is less concerned about game mechanics and more about how getting in the shoes of Vaurcae, so to speak, would even be like. It doesn't have to be as long as you wrote it currently, just some stuff regarding what would feel unique about being a bug. 2. As far as I am concerned, there are no IPCs in Tret. I'm guessing Dex's training was, instead, focused to more in working with other Hephaestus colleagues than what they would face on the planet. I don't think it's fair to ask too much regarding VR currently as it's not fully written in the wiki at the moment, but I would like to make a note that Vetju's influence, as you put it, would be present, since the surrogates and their first experiences would all be performed by their own brood. Vetju is mostly with Hephaestus out of necessity, and because of this I imagine any Hephaestus worker's training would be different from whatever is run with her other workers. I guess what I'm trying to say is that, with a more social training, how would Dex see the rest of their brood? On the same vein; what do they think of Zkaii and Zo'ra, specifically? 3. Currently, the only hive involved with Hephaestus is K'lax. Like construction workers in real life, it would be logical for Hephaestus to move around Dex after a project is done. Is this the first time Dex is outside of Tret, and if so, what does it think about human space? As well as other species, such as Dionae and Tajara, that will be present on board the Aurora as co-workers? 4. Vaurca religion, while being laissez-faire in a way, is still deeply important to each individual, and an atheist would be likely unheard of in the Vaurca society. Does Dex follow any faith? Good luck. -
Hi, thanks for applying. I'll ask you some questions. I like that you're using some of the new lore, which isn't even a week old at this moment. Also that you're applying as K'lax, since that's probably the most negelcted Hive. With that in mind: 1. A theme laid down around various bits of the Vaurca wiki, most noteably the Sedantis page, is that Vaurcae are embarrassed of even conceiving the study of the pre Era of Augments. I wrote Doss with that in mind, so I'm wondering, how does Silith feel about the primitive Vaurcae? 2. If I recall correctly you told me your bug is around ten years old, which means that it actually was alive before they reached Uouea-Essa. What does Silith think about Unathi, and Tret? 3. K'lax is in a funny position when it comes to dealing with other Hives. They're stranged of Zo'ra and have a turbulent relationship with C'thur. What are Silith's personal thoughts on these, and how would it interact with other Vaurcae on station? 4. Finally, does Silith follow any faith? Vaurca society is very lax when it comes to enforcing religion, but atheists are mostly an odd concept. If they do follow a faith, how does it affect their life, if any? Good luck.
