furrycactus Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 Feedback thread for this PR: https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/6516 It's not my PR, but there was no feedback thread posted as it was deemed "not necessary" because people would... actually state their preferences??? And then the PR had discussion locked so people couldn't give feedback there. This entire silencing of community opinion aside, how's everyone else feel about this idea? I, personally, don't like the security aviators and would prefer that we keep the secglasses, because I don't want my security characters to look like absolute fucking doofs wearing aviators while on the job.
VTCobaltblood Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 I do agree that the aviators's sprite is worse than default sechud glasses.
legitimatespaceperson Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 There's too much flash protection on the station. Sunglasses should be removed from loadouts (who put them there anyway, it's powergame prime hour) and most of sec, maybe leave 2 pairs on a rack or on some tables. Should be mostly gone from maints too. If you want flash protection wear a welding mask, if you want to be a ~cool dude~ with ~cool shades~ stop wasting officer slots and waste the detective slot instead.

The sunglasses in the loadout already don't have flash protection unless you're command or security. And not to mention, flashes are scarcely used anymore since they were nerfed to no longer be an instant win button. And the aviators also have a flash protection mode as well, so.

All sorts of stuns were nerfed, but whether that's good or not is a discussion for another day (it is). But after the nerf sunglasses shouldn't hard counter flashes anymore and therefore stop being the obvious and immediate choice for most people. This can be done in two ways - through limiting sunglasses availability, and through nerfing sunglasses. The latter is more difficult than the former. Limiting sunglasses availability is actually simple enough, now that I looked at the code: SecHUDs are a subclass of sunglasses, which simply does not make sense. You're telling me the glasses would both limit light and decide to display their own overlay on top of this light to help you identify things. Not going to work. Split them off into a separate category that won't have flash protection pre-installed. Whether you have a SecHUD or flash protection should be a choice you have to make, instead of the current power creep of sunglasses > HUDglasses > God knows what's next. Eye lasers?

And calling the sunglasses powercreep as well is a huge stretch too. You were suggesting nerfing flash protection across the board and changing or removing things, which should probably go in it's own suggestion thread, not an opinion poll on whether people want to have this item removed in favor of a different one.

The specific medium of a feedback thread was deemed unnecessary. This is a style specific question: for every person that prefers one option, you'll find another who prefers the other. What are we going to gain from this thread? Count the amount of people who like either one, and then make a decision based on that, while wholly accepting the fact that the feedback posted here is horribly under-representative of the community at large? No. And there really isn't much feedback beyond that you can offer about the sprites. If we wanted metrics on this PR, we would go around this another way. Specifically by initiating a vote on the server. Since pure numbers in this case would be a lot more interesting. But that also seems over-stretched for a simple PR about one simple object. Ultimately it should be the development team's job to judge whether or not a specific detail of implementation (which a singular sprite is) matches established convention and content.
Zaeperry99 Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 I'm not sure if "I like Aviators and HUDglasses, why the hell do we need to remove one in favor of the other when all it's going to do is create a divide in the community" is a style specific choice or an opinion that should be taken away from everyone except coders.
furrycactus Posted June 8, 2019 Author Posted June 8, 2019 I don't see why it even needs to be a consideration in the first place. Why can't both be kept? Are we removing medHUDs because aviators do the same thing? And material and meson goggles too?

What I see here is just clarification for the reasons you are silencing the community's opinion, which so far has been mostly negative. I will provide feedback on the aviator sprites specifically, though. I don't personally care for differences in functionality. They make character eyes look really, really dopey. This is not as much of an issue with prescription glasses, which are often almost invisible on white-skinned characters. Aviator glasses, however, are extremely clearly visible on the character in all of their states. To demonstrate: This is what aviator glasses look like on a real-life person. Here we can see that the eyes are in the center of the glass. Spoiler This is how they look on a spessman, illustrated: Spoiler Because the size restrictions don't allow the eyes to be placed in the center, they have to be placed in a manner that makes the character visually appear cross-eyed. Current sechuds and secsunglasses, however, don't have the actual eyes visible, and therefore don't have this problem. I can't believe I wasted any time of my life on writing a reply that will be dismissed by developers anyway
Snakebittenn Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 I would like to point out that player feedback was already collected the first time we did this, in an ingame poll with many, many responses.
furrycactus Posted June 8, 2019 Author Posted June 8, 2019 You're showing us a graph where 71 people wanted the aviators to replace them outright, but 94 did not, and 45 did not care either way. 71 people that want the sunglasses, which offer both flash protection and HUD, replaced with aviators that toggle between the two. 53 people that want to keep both. 41 people that want to keep the mechanic of sunglasses but with the sprite of the aviators instead. 94 people that don't want aviators replacing sechuds, as opposed to 71 who do, and 45 who did not care either way.
Skull132 Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 If we were to follow the democratic wish, we'd replace the sprites but not the mechanics. Though the mechanics may have merits beyond initial negative reaction.
Scheveningen Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 (edited) I have a different preference for aesthetic, and personally I find that the aviators look much better than the secHUD sunglasses. Security sunglasses and the standard sunglasses suffer from sprite fidelity issues from the rest of the game's progressively updating style thanks to individuals such as @ParadoxSpace, whichever account is alsoananswer's, @kyres1 and several others who I'd list if I remembered other names besides those two three I wish I could count. Which is my bad for not recalling but I figure you get the point. Using matte colors such as #000000 that the pair of sunglasses actually has as part of its sprite looks super ugly, cartoony and has very little depth to the image. The aviators look good imo and the only issue to me is the division of the glasses settings actually providing mechanical advantages and disadvantages. Which, frankly, I can get over, having to micromanage the two settings for a given situation as a sec officer is annoying but only annoying at most. Edited June 9, 2019 by Scheveningen maths
Arrow768 Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 Well, personally I dont see the point in that PR. At the moment people can choose if they want to use the aviators or the normal sec glasses. I dont really have an issue with that. Also, if you read through the topic, it becomes pretty obvious why feedback on that wasn't deemed necessary. For every person that prefers the sunglasses there is another person that prefers the aviators. It just comes down to a question of personal preference. Also, two notes regarding the poll: The poll is pretty old and was made before the introduction of the aviators (and therefore outdated) I am unsure if the data presented here has been properly processed. (Some peeps have multiple byond accounts to vote multiple times.)
FreshRefreshments Posted June 9, 2019 Posted June 9, 2019 Theres no point to get rid of both. It doesn't really hurt, to have both. Why replace one with the other when we can just, have two eyeglass items for Sec? Is it that awful?

Why replace one with the other when we can just, have two eyeglass items for Sec? Is it that awful? Sec already has 6.2 ( .5 for prescription sechud you can make by pressing the scouter onto some prescription glasses, and another .5 for the tactical goggles, .1 for the 3 different varieties of sunglasses they have, and another .1 for the Aut'akh sec hud.) types of eyewear. Two of them do exactly the same thing even thematically and aesthetically, and one of them is a very outdated sprite that literally uses pitch black.
Carver Posted June 9, 2019 Posted June 9, 2019 I prefer the aviators over the default HUDglasses sprite v a s t l y, but that doesn't mean I want the defaults removed. There is 0 reason to remove either other than some strange personal dislike of either sprite.

Security Aviators already have that. You either choose between SecHUD or flash protection. When I use them, I always have the flash protection on, so, that wouldn't help much.

Butterrobber202 Posted June 13, 2019 Posted June 13, 2019 What is the point in removing the base glasses.

It's hardly powergaming, nor does it matter since flashes have been nerfed into the trash anyways. As mentioned before, all the sunglasses with legitimate flash protection in the loadout are locked to Security and Command, your concern there is unwarranted. There's absolutely nothing wrong with Security having innate access to combined HUDglasses, especially seeing as the majority of flashes are in their possession. But if they were to be split, then I'd assume you'd want the removal of prescription mesons/prescription medical huds as well going by the logic presented here.
