Medbay Job Reshuffling

The Problem

- Currently we suffer from a problem where you can end up with whack shit like three surgeons and two nurses. In addition, you can't really add more significant alt titles without the list being bloated.

How do we solve it?

- Medical Doctors are renamed to Physician. It's just a better name.

- Change the physician slots to 4 instead of 5.

- Add two separate surgeon slots.

- Thus, we end up with two different slots with clearly defined responsibilities.

I'd prefer if there where more or equal nurses than physicians. what if we drop MD/Surgeon slots to 2-3 total.

roll the remaining slots, and the intern/resident role into one. make them all alt titles.

Bay handles this issue well. there are oodles of slots in medical, but only 3 doctors including the CMO. the rest are corpsman, medical technicians, and so on.

I would very much like 2 Nurse slots. Because otherwise my nurse and another nurse she is friends with can literally never work the same shift, meaning I am pretty much forced visitor, plus I do not like the idea of fighting over the nurse slot.

Consider that we'll have the CMO as a full doctor, as well. So we can have a single physician plus the two surgeons. Thats a total of 4 doctors, which is still a lot, but at least less than the current 6.

Maybe have a single surgeon instead? So that's three doctors in total, and the two nurses.

When you say 1 physicial slot do you also include the alt titles? Ergo you either have an MD or a Trauma Physician?

The way the assembly line is set up i would add 2 surgeon slots but maintain the alt titles for the MD slot as they are. Surgeon is very specialized but we end up flooded with them sometimes because its a high demand job. Thats why surgeons had a scale back in their responsibilities in the medical reform.

Nurses are not a role deserving of a unique job slot. They are extra hands for MDs.

I don't agree with the idea of one physician, at all. You want one physician, but two surgeons? Even though the physician is replacing Medical Doctor, which is the role that tends to do more general treatment, with surgeons being a specialised role? What is the logic behind this?

Resi’s ‘I know very much about how medical works and probably have the most hours spent in it’ suggestion:

2 physicians

2 surgeons

2 nurses

You will not reliably have a cmo. It’s silly to cut a job slot because a whitelisted command slot might also be able to do that- also, command roles should not be taking the place of a slot in the first place, it’s a management role. So, two physicians.

Surgeons speak for themselves.

We need two nurse slots. Brainmed is a BITCH. And I love that about it. Nurses are a godsend on brainmed. Nurses are the people running when there is no EMT, they’re the ones doing cpr for two minutes straight while a doctor frantically medicates and gets blood levels up, they’re the ones running from the OR out into medical because someone unexpectedly has toxins rising dangerously in surgery.

If we’re cutting any roles, it should be one surgeon slot. Most physicians can do surgical basics anyway.

Thats true at the last part.  The different alt titles can do either basic or advanced, but only surgeons can do specialized.

Ati's "Help i've played too much brainmed" suggestion:

Why do we have Physician? This role seems superfluous.

I think the ideal splitting of jobs, to avoid silly situations of >5 nurses, no surgeons would be to split the jobs on a very simple premise: Can they do Surgery or Not?

Thus, 2 Surgeons, 4 Physicians. Make Nurse a subtitle of Physician. The roles are clearly defined, There's little to no slot fighting. After all; What is a Physician's Role, compared to a Nurse? More jobs means more slot fighting.

Surgery itself is split into 3 teirs. Only surgeons can do specialized surgery.

I would be fine with either the 2-2-2 spread or 2 surgeons/4 other option. Though honestly maybe make that only 3 other (nurse/doctor/other titles) because medical would have a whopping total of 12 slots all told in either of those cases and that's just... a lot of people jostling for room in the GTR. I'm leaning toward the latter because, as far as round to round play goes, you really don't see much distinction in what nurses do versus what MDs do even though "realistically" they're very separate jobs. So splitting them up into clearly defined slots seems unnecessary.

I would absolutely suggest two nurse slots at the bare minimum, only one sounds really bad, and nurses need some love.

Otherwise I'd say, either 2/2/2, or 4/2 with nurses being an alt title. I'd almost even suggest 5/1, given that surgery is a specialist field, and other roles can do surgery too.

Because of GMT. Nurses are expected to do surface-level stuff to keep someone alive, Physicians administer chemicals or other treatments to prepare someone's recovery for surgery. Surgeries will re-break limbs if someone's external organ is over a damage threshold.

Nurses in terms of gameplay are very similar to residents in that they can do stuff within medical but they can't do it on their own initiative in normal circumstances.

I really don't see how this adds anything. It's just taking away and causing issues. The current medbay 'pool' is pretty low rn, and adding more limits seems counter-intuitive.

Imo I'd actually simplify the whole thing to broaden role use (you can specialise flavor wise as much as you like) and have simply:

Trainee Medical Officer - cadet/new person role.

Medical Officer - Can do pretty much anything as per your character.

Paramedic - As now essentially.

Chief Medical Officer - Is the head of.

I agree. I mainly only play during the 'low' hours....but certainly have not seen any issues around the slot assignments. It's not a slot issue..it's a RP issue. Sometimes there are 3 surgeons and only one Resident... some surgeons will do general medicine and others won't during that time. In most medical roles have flexibility to perform jobs outside your title but well within your training/qualifications/experience. All surgeons are trained initial in medicine prior to proceeding to surgery etc...
