Seeing old medical layout makes my heart flutter

No matter what server someone goes on, you will learn to learn Space Station 13. I think learning mechanics is much easier on VG station or Goon rather than Aurora. But no matter where the player starts, they will brute force their way into understanding the game or quit.

More Shin'Kali. How is this different from Smog's earlier suggestion?

[Accepted]Zer0's Dionae Application
DeadLantern replied to Zer0Winds's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Interesting character and backstory. I would like for you to explain how this certain Nymph feels about his situation. What does he think on the unending lonlieness, and the death of the only man that could satisfy a nymph's endless curiosty. What is it like to have your knowledge be limited? What does he think on humanity--Its blood, and their thoughts? What of the ambient radiation? Does he lust for more radiation, or is he sated? And, more pressingly, what of the other nymphs? A cyclopes is a single entity made up of a large choir. You can't just talk about one singer. I am not asking you to write a whole backstory on each Nymph, but a mere rundown would be good enough. You just should show that you understand that the Diona is made up of multiple voices, not one large one. You should at least acknowledge their thoughts, or at least summarize them. Expand on those two things and it will be good. -
Lancer's Tajara Deputy Application
DeadLantern replied to The lancer's topic in Developer Applications Archives
On that same line of questioning: What do you think is lacking in peacetime lore, in the facets of Tajara culture that are unexplored? And what facets of Tajara culture would you like to explore? Examples could be Religion, Industry, Economy, Familial structures, etc. Basically what would you want to expand into with your intent of ending the war? -
[Accepted] Nekonyan123's Skrell Application
DeadLantern replied to Nekonyan123's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Interesting. It clearly has a lot of effort put into it, and this whitelist application hits the same beats that other whitelist apps hit. I find that he actually failed as an interesting choice, and that he chooses to live out the rest of his life being a corporate scientist. This is a good note, because as a very accomplished Skrell, being a mere corporate scientist is not really something to strive for. It is a milestone, for sure, but a stepping stone, or something to fall on to, or for the lazy. Or, at least, to be a very good low ranking corporate scientist. I want to know more about how Jarg thinks about his failure. Does he think he is lesser than the idols he wants to become--lesser than the Skrell should be. Maybe this would tamper with his relations with humans, or maybe he may think of himself as too incompetent and fearing to mess up again to engage in studies with humans. These aren't questions for you to answer, though you certainly can; they are just things for you to think about when you go on to play the character more. I like this application, it shows enough finesse in Skrellian lore to be accepted, and it has my blessing. -
What's great is that he can play a variety of characters, who may have differing goals, psyches, matters of planning, etc, and play them to their fullest. A very well rounded roleplayer who can expand on one central idea that a character is focused on and help it blossom into a fully fledged character. Absolutely worth a trial just to see how he works under pressure. However, I've seen him be interim HoS, and when he's not traitor, he does it well. I want to see him trial!

[Accepted]Dadlantern's Diona Application
DeadLantern replied to DeadLantern's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
"Those who built this place knew what they wrought." Yes, I did take inspiration from the Halo Franchise, how did you know?! Anyway, only unifying characteristic is that they still think the empty vastness of space is their true home, and they long to be close to it. Other than that, I imagined the nymphs had various differences. The nymph focused on in the story loves the blue blood, even admires it. It was the blood that gave him knowledge after all, and it thinks that the Vox contain some noble knowledge, even if they do unnonble things. The other nymphs have a range of opinions from admiration to loathing. Another unifying characteristic of the nymphs is that they all hunger for mass. After being in space so long with nothing to consume... the ecstasy of consumption may overtake them a little. I could go in depth on every single Nymph's story, but I'd prefer not to do that right now, as that takes a lot of time and it would be better to find my footing in this character ICly rather than deciding all of its traits now. -
[Accepted]MattAtlas' IPC Application
DeadLantern replied to MattAtlas's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I see this same problem with IPC applications over and over again. It's a very easy problem to stumble into. Your character doesn't have a personality. Of course, it's easier to say "well it's a robot so it won't have a completely overt personality". And that's true. But IPCs are much more complicated than your simple borg. They think--even if it is bound to programming, they think and adapt. What does Walter think about being worth less than the other robots? Being favored less, being used less... Being tossed into the trash like he is just a bunch of parts. Does he doubt humanity's empathy? Doubt his own skill? What does he think about being activated just to be resold again and again? What does it think about being worthless? You say that you don't want Walter to have emotions, and that's fine. But he must have an opinion on the situation it finds itself in. And you don't really articulate how it thinks about the situation. It is a real neat concept, there are a lot of doors open. I'd just like to see one of those doors opened. -
BYOND Key: DeadLantern Character Names: Tyanna Tozi Species you are applying to play: Diona Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yep Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this race: Like all other species, I knew nothing before reading the wiki page on them. I always assumed it was quite boring. I found the opposite. The amount of opportunities one can have while playing a Diona... and the lack of exploration. Almost no one plays Diona, and that is a disservice. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: It'd be easier to state what stays the same than what changes. But alas, I'll list the differences. Diona are incredibly intelligent, but don't start out that way. They first start out as a little nymph, curious creatures birthed from a Diona "egg". They want knowledge, light, and radiation. They can clump together to form a Cyclopes, which usually takes 6 nymphs. This is a conglomerate creature that works together as one entity. Diona grow in nymphs and size over time as the collect more individuals. They can even grow to the size of a planet. They can absorb the DNA of others and learn their language--they are cryptic and cool. They are truly xenos. Character Name: The Drinking of Blue Blood Please provide a short backstory for this character (Aproxomately two paragraphs) The egg from which this nymph hatched is ancient. Seeds were dispersed in the empty vacuum in space by a random Diona. It floated in space until it latched onto a comet. It had all the neccessary materials for a proper birth--water, carbon, oxygen. After the nymph was birthed, the only emotion it felt was loneliness. It was lonely for some time, without gaining intellect or friends. Luckily, the nymph was in the vicinity of a large star, which gave the necessary nutrition needed for survival. The nymph waited their for an age until a Vox Arkship happened upon this nymph in the void of space. It was large, about 100 pounds, bloated by radiation. The Vox took it upon the arkship. Culture shock would be an understatement--taken from the empty void, it lusted to discover the things that was shown to it. It latched onto a new being, a Vox, and drank delicious blood. The Vox were entertained by this curious beast--they actually had collected a few before, and were well used to the expanding knowledge and curiosity of the nymphs, even when it led to blood sucking. 6 other nymphs were collected and thrown into a small cage together. But they were not separate for long. The Vox found, in about 4 hours, a Cyclopes was born. Finding that the nutrition on the ship was lacking compared to the radiation of a star, it was always found next to windows. The Vox, a little scared of the being, still saw a use from it. The Diona, now christened as "The Drinking of Blue Blood", was used as a body shield. The arkship was efficient, and the Cyclopes was used efficiently as well. The myth of a creature tall as a ship's roof sieging research stations spread around the sector that the Arkship operated in. A Skrell research ship found that a certain Arkship was orbiting the solar system they were in. However, it was unmoving and seemingly out of fuel. The Skrell dispatched a craft to investigate the Arkship. Before entering, they noticed the alarmingly high radiation levels in the ship. Breaching the exterior revealed the horrifying truth--The walls of the ship were completely collapsed, and one single Cyclopes monitored a Supermatter Core in the lounging room. The Vox crew--gone. The exact thing that happened to the Vox remained unknown. The Diona was secured and brought to Jargon. The case attracted some notoriety among researchers, but the Clyclopes never spoke in more than a sentence or two. It only cared about if they were getting enough matter and radiation. It preferred biological matter over all else, and was used to extreme levels of radiation. Now on Jargon with nowhere to go, it acclimated quickly. It immediately sought out a job that put it next to a star. The Drinking of Blue Blood found an NT station that fit that bill well. What do you like about this character? Just read it man. I've never made a character backstory like this, and I really like how vague it is and how I can expand on it. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Notes: ok

[Accepted] Sharkatk's Unathi Application
DeadLantern replied to Sharkatk's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Ah, a blue Unathi. I also applied with a blue Unathi. With my application, I originally had a similar idea to your app. The patriarch of the household hid the blue Unathi away from the world, not telling anyone about their existence. But, I was later informed that this is not behavior befitting a normal Unathi household. Unathi tradition is heavily male-dominated, and letting the world know that you have an heir is very important. I later revised my app so that the Father was found out and the family put on blast for doing such a bad thing. I'd like to see some of that illustrated in the application. More on what the world would think of him. It makes sense he would find solace in non-Sinta, but Sinta still need to discriminate against him and whatnot. His family would be put on blast for hiding an heir, or they'd be viewed with shame for producing such a strange and non-befitting heir. -
So, she just up and left. I don't find that believable, frankly, even with something as radical as a death of a partner. Surely, it would have caused some dissent in his mind, but to just up and leave her family, her alliegence, her whole life? A more gradual fall of beliefs would be better for the character. Perhaps, her belief in the PRA started high up, and fell down a slippery slope. Maybe her Husband's death was a main factor, but I really just don't see someone from being a feverent supporter to a complete rebel. And leaving her whole family? I really want an explanation on such an explosive change in such a short amount of time. Aside from that part, everything else is fine. You discuss enough about religion and politics for the whitelist to be passed. I would really just like a fleshed out reason on why she left Adhomai.

MattAtlas' Tajara Application

I didn't see an issue either--I'm not doubting that it's not possible, it's just that it wouldn't be a very common sight in Adhomai. I just wanted an explanation on why or how. -

[Accepted]Xevanthraxis' Skrell Application
DeadLantern replied to Xevanthraxis's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
You mention things--places, events, happenings, things--but you never expand on it. You talk about their dietary restrictions and humor but... just end it there. Expand on it. How is their humor like? What was the synthetic rebellion? What are these places and new worlds you talk about in this app. You also never elaborate on your character's personality. Right now, it seems like it is a shell for a job you want. It doesn't feel like a character, it feels like a mechanism to play a job you like. Why do they want to have that job? Why are they doing this? How does skrell society affect that choice? This app is pretty barebones as it is. It needs expansion for more criticism to arrive. -
[Accepted] Zer0Winds' IPC Application
DeadLantern replied to Zer0Winds's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
The character you have right now is good. It falls into the pitfalls virtually every single IPC backstory falls into--it's too rigid. Too clean. And, due to the nature of IPCs, it makes total sense for it to be that clean. It wouldn't make sense for an IPC to sympathize with the common worker and rebel against Nanotrasen because that's not in their programming. Except, this character doesn't fall into that pitfall. SIGMA is calculating whether this agreement between NT and his chassis his good or not. It is constantly checking itself, piece by piece, to make sure that it is in a situation that is desirable. What if a new variable was thrown its way, something that compromised its survivability? Its efficiency? What if SIGMA, over time, became wore-down with NT? There were too many variables, and every calculation showed that being in NT was undesirable. I'm not saying you should put this into your app--I'm just giving one example you could expand on this character. With a short snippet you've created an idea that could expand infinitely. It just takes you expanding it to an interesting idea. This app his a great foundation, it just needs a little more motivation and expansion for it to be accepted. IPC apps are hard to make, but you've created an interesting premise to go on. If you choose not to, that's fine, but I think you can expand on this idea. -
MattAtlas' Tajara Application
DeadLantern replied to MattAtlas's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
What a great application! This is a point of view rarely seen from Tajara: the nobility. I like that the character feels stifled; they should be ruling from a stately manor watching people grow their food, not working like some commoner. It will be very interesting to see how he interacts with Zhan or M'sai on station, especially when it comes to treating them. One thing that is a little strange that the Njarir Mother in this story follows Ma'take. It is certainly a racial religion--it's kind of like finding a South African practicing Hinduism. While it isn't as far fetched as that analogy, I'd like an explanation. I would doubt the explanation that the mother adopted Ma'take to blend in with the peasantry--that is not befitting a noble, but they may have become used to that. More on the character's motivations would be good. You certainly have enough to be passed, this is just because this character is so interesting. Perhaps he thinks he can rebuild his family name by achieving reputation in Tau Ceti? Maybe he is so doubtful of the NKA's existence for a particular reason. Maybe he truly believes that the NKA could grow into a true empire, but watching his entire family crumble makes him doubt that the nobility could gain the same power they used to have. Great application! -

DeadLantern replied to NewOriginalSchwann's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
While compared to other whitelist applications there is little mention of politics, this is still an interesting application. It would be interesting to see how this character interacts with the 'normal' Tajara who mostly doubt Raskara, citing it as a myth, not existing, being smaller than told, or "that one metal band". There is really nothing about the character's personality--what was his reaction to this cult in his city? Cults are not a normal thing. Was he alienated? Was he pervasive in his detective work, or was he scared away by threats of voodoo and mysticism? I'd like to see more on the character's reaction to his job, to better guage their personality. There's also little talk about politics, which I mentioned earlier. It's certainly not a necessity, but displaying some knowledge of the various civil wars would be good. I like how you separate Adhomai by its interstellar years and its pre-interstellar years. Reminds me of the native americans, how their whole life was similarly changed from the encounter of outsiders. Good app but I'd like to see more things that I've listed above. -

This is an interesting backstory. You nail why this character is an interesting, a sort of "fish out of water" character. Overall your app is good, not much you are missing. All I would truly ask is your opinion on the new IPC factions (golden deep, etc). I believe that they are very underused in the community, and I would love to see more IPC players use them. Other than that, good application, and a interesting character.
