  1. Before I go into my comment on this application, I should specify that I have yet to interact with Weaselscribe's characters Having read through both your application, the concerns brought up by Ricky, and your response to those, I feel confident in giving my +1 to this application. The backstory is succinct and, as Ricky mentioned, shows a good understanding of the lore. I personally think seeing Sithar on the ship would be a nice addition assuming I get a chance to interact with him (med and sec life be hard on that interaction with ops). The issue with current characters seeming bland is a tricky one. Aurora does have a shortage of antags, and a shortage of extendobros, which leaves those taking the mantel of antag with either burnout or going all in which tends to hurt the characters during non-antag rounds. Your response, however, shows to me that you're both willing to change and able to see where and how you need to adjust things to be a better player. TLDR; Good application, good understanding of lore, shows the positive signs of a player who can learn and grow. If only it was another aut'akh character... +1
  2. CCIA Staff Application Basic Information Byond key: williammurdoch Character names: Aisha Hrakra Nafisha Nejem Tia Ferrant Age: 19 Timezone: American Eastern Standard Time (EST) What times are you most available?: Currently: Any time after 7:30pm any day of the week During Fall/Spring Semesters: Any time after 6:30pm weekdays, all-day on weekends Experience How long have you played SS13?: About 3.5 years, give or take. I don't have a precise date. How long have you played on Aurora?: About 3 years. My forum account was made on July 11th, 2020. How active on the forums, discord and/or server are you? I am very active on the forums. I am in the discords and frequently look through them all, but I typically refrain from talking beyond what's needed for Wiki development and RP on the relay. My activity on the server tends to ebb and flow. Typically I can only manage a round or two a day due to time constraints, although sometimes I can go for a week or two without much desire to play. This doesn't affect my presence on discord or the forums, though. Have you ever been banned, and if so, how long and why?: I have never been banned. Have you ever volunteered as moderation staff for any other servers, SS13 or otherwise?: I have not. Do you have any other experience that you believe would be relevant to a position in the CCIA?: I have no exact experience. The closest experience I could point to is my current position on the Wiki Maintenance team. Personality Why do you want to join the CCIA?: The CCIA has the important presence as the In-Character "moderator" of characters in our setting. There is a very appealing aspect of handling in-character disputes and cases that emerge from roleplay, and how the results of those investigations can affect the setting and roleplay of the involved characters. What do you think are the most important qualities for a CCIA Agent to possess?: There could be several qualities that an Agent should have, but the key qualities, in my opinion, are persistence and attention to detail. Persistence is vital to any investigation or regulating body. Stopping at the testimony of one side and making a decision from there won't end well. To truly figure out who's at fault and what should be done takes a level of persistence to not end when it feels right, but when it is right. Attention to detail is very important when working with anything that has multiple sides, points, so on. Taking in every piece of information, connecting dots, and making a correct decision from those points requires more focus on the details of the situation, or else a faulty decision might be made. What do you think the purpose of a CCIA Agent is in an ongoing round?: In an on-going round, they are meant to be gathering information for an on-going case and providing help with Regulations, Procedures, etc. What do you think the purpose of a CCIA Agent is outside of the server?: Outside of the server, the role of a CCIA Agent keeps some of the latter point made with the last answer. They are there to answer questions about the Regulations and Procedures which characters are in. Beyond this, they offer a place to go if in-character corrective action is being sought out, or the opposite of that, as well as making decisions on unclear points in the Procedure, Chain of Command, or Regulations. How do you handle stress?: I would say I handle stress well. I avoid letting it affect my work at the very least. How well do you work autonomously?: I work well autonomously. I'd point to my work as a wiki maintainer so far as evidence of this. Additional Notes: None
  3. I've worked with Ruslana for a few shifts now and feel confident with a +1. They know their stuff, communicate well with command and are overall good for the position.
  4. The only interaction I have had with the dance floor beyond ignoring it is making an H for Horizon. During the remapping, the idea of putting a tree where the dance floor is was thrown around. I would love the return of Patience, but if that isn't being considered then some more greenery or a mini-holodeck as Ramke said.
  5. As far as the wiki states, and I have confirmed this with the lore team, calico is only Hharar, not the other way around. As shown in the screenshot below, when I played my own Calico (Jrizar the surgeon), it is known that calico is a Hharar fur pattern (confirmed this again with Ramke). But, this comment is not to correct, I just felt the need to point that out all things considered. As for my own feedback, I only have one question beyond the three listed by Ping. How does Malika act towards people form the other nations in normal working life? She is sure to come across others in the diverse work-spaces of human space. Otherwise, you were quite curious, asked a lot of questions and took feedback that clearly has made a good backstory in my eyes. I recognize Nash Slater and quite enjoy seeing him around overall. A solid +1 from me.
  6. I wasn't made aware of the results of the poll when I wrote that. Since neither Cael nor Bear seemed to have an issue with it, I assume the results were no as well, but that may not be true.
  7. I like this, and it also ropes in the other thread: Gives OM more to do, makes the XO's role clearer, and also satisfies the issue of succession of captain's powers with the protocol. I think there might be some conflict over the responsibility of the Spark, since that is sort of under the OMs oversight.
  8. Thank you for the answers, I'm willing to give a +1. I hope to see Hendarr on ship!
  9. Hey! It's nice to see another Tajara app. I gave it a read through, but I have a few questions before I'm willing to give a +1. Hendarr is a Zhan-M'sai crossbreed. How did this affect how he was treated in life? Not just in the Parivara, but beyond it with the Cell and in Little Adhomai. It's clear that Hendarr joined the ALA, ultimately, but what are his views on the PRA and NKA? In a similar vein to the last question, how does Hendarr feel about the divide between military juntas and civilian governments? Crevus is notorious for being controlled by the crime families of the city. How did this affect his venture into making an inn in the city? Was it through the blessing and support of one of the families? Final question. Smuggler ships can often be dangerous for the passengers. How was his trip to Tau Ceti?
  10. Ramke is a joy to talk with both ICly and OOCly. Their characters are great, being both unique and well written. That's not to mention their ability to write a concise backstory for this interesting Unathi. I wish I could give a +2, but a +1 will have to do.
  11. Hey! It's nice to see another Tajaran whitelist, and the foundation of the character, an orphaned street urchin finding a way through life, is quite an interesting one that I haven't seen before. I do have some questions, though. You list under the species color question that Boris is grey with black spots. The color range for M'sai is different shades of white. Is Boris a M'sai-Zhan mix? You mention Alexei's death was "due to the workings of law". Could you expand on what you meant by workings of law? How did Alexei's death affect Boris? What is Boris's view on the war as a whole? The DPRA is known for being xenophobic and closed off to the mega-corps. How did Boris go about seeking employment with a mega-corp, and which mega-corp? Was it hard due to his relative lack of education? You mention that Boris wasn't effective at hard-labor or service jobs and is forced to take a combat job. I assume this means security, so how does he feel about this this? What are Boris's view on each nation (PRA, DPRA, NKA)? What religion does Boris follow? I'm excited to see where this goes and what your answer are.
  12. I've interacted with Gary icly and oocly for a while now, almost since I started playing on Aurora! In all this time I've seen good characters, grounded rp, and everything that makes a good command player. I would love to see Gary in command. +1
  13. As logical as this seems, people don't always want to go this route or can't justify it. Once we account in species restriction, the "just make captain" point gets a little further from the solution. Ideally just making a captain is best, but not everyone does. The easiest path is not always the one taken. Not a point worth arguing over anymore so this is the last I'll say on it. IC consideration is valid, but there's no way to prove if having a middleman XO would make things more efficient and extract more profit or make things less efficient and cause loss in profit. There isn't a way to prove whichever is the one ICly, so I don't really think it should affect the decision. Command isn't meant to be democratic either, it's meant to further ship goals and do what's best for company assets and so on. The captain is trusted with ultimate power because they are deemed loyal and experienced enough to make those big calls unlike the rest of staff who are either not loyal enough, not experienced enough, or not human/skrell. It's a way to ensure that company interests are secured regardless of the situation. Plus, I'll quote what Boggle said: If the captain needs something done, they have the command channel to do it. If they want the XO to go do all the legwork and delegation for them, they can tell the XO to do it. If they want the XO to be second line in succession, they can declare it over radio, shit maybe even give them the power before the need arises. That is the prerogative of the captain and not all of them might want the XO to be in those positions automatically. It is the Captain's ship, for all intents and purposes. Let them choose how best to run it.
  14. The way I see it, if the captain wants a right-hand-person then they can choose someone already. Nothing stops them, afaik, in regulations. If they want to designate a Head of Staff to take over if they die or are incapacitated, they can do that. I don't see the use in making it official if not every captain wants to have the XO as next in line or their right-hand-person. If a captain isn't around, I don't want the XO to become mini-captain. If people want to trial it on the server then sure. I think there would need to be more discussions on what the exact details are. I'm skeptical, but who knows. Maybe it's unfounded and testing it out will change my mind.
  15. So, I will throw my hat into the ring and say that I don't think any command should be inherently second in line of succession. And to address the big line: This will, without a doubt, be stretched and taken to mean second in command regardless. Whitelist doesn't inherently mean people suddenly stop pushing boundaries on authority and power. Giving someone a wiff of "you are second in line" will give them more leeway to abuse power. Any actions XO's take as de facto 2iC are allowed only so much as the rest of command accepts it. Not having anything remotely close to a "you are second in line or in command" maintains this barrier to abuse. As for some of the examples: I think you have what the primary focus of the captain and XO's roles are meant to be (on Aurora not irl navy ships). The XO handles the bridge, the captain handles delegation and cross-departmental teamwork. Captain decides to renovate the bar but needs new materials. They give you, the XO, the task of maneuvering the ship towards the nearest mineral asteroid. They order the CE to ready up designs for a new bar and send a list of materials to the OM. They then order the OM to let their miners know what to focus on. They also work with the XO to ensure the bartenders don't get too angry their bar is being ripped up for a new one. In this scenario, the captain has the overarching goal: a new bar. They then delegate and coordinate departments to get it done. The XO is coordinating the bridge and BCs to find the miners a mineral asteroid and helping their bartenders not riot. For almost all of the scenarios you listed, including the immediate death of the captain, command is structured in a way to deal with it without needing an immediate acting captain. Assuming the HoS knows how to handle their teams correctly, security doesn't need to be told to retreat. Most things, such as telling engineering to put up barricades, can be done with a simple please (or without as I have done as CMO), and the other Head of Staff almost always obliges unless there is something truly stopping them. The one area I'll concede on is what happens when the captain is out of commission. Technically, acting captainship can't be taken (or is a waste to), but major command decisions need to be made. If command ever gets to deadlock on those things, which is rare, then I have to admit fair point. I may be too cautious, and perhaps giving them second in line of succession will be fine, but I'm skeptical regardless. tldr; Give an inch and they'll take a mile, even with a whitelist. Captain delegates and coordinates inter-departments, XO runs the bridge. Command knows how to handle emergencies even without a given 2iC.
  16. I think out of all the different options listed, I prefer Carver's Chief Bridge Officer the most. For one, Bridge Officer and Bridge Crewman, while different, is just close enough that I imagine some confusion could be had. Adding Chief there adds an extra degree of "you are command", adds some level of uniformity, and completely gets rid of the off-chance someone confuses BO and BC And, as with some of the others here, I would very much prefer if Command was kept as "All equal under the captain" system. It's a better working environment, and control over the bridge does not immediately equal control of every department, Head of Staff, and so on. Everyone has their role, and I think the XO should emphasis more of their bridge role.
  17. Basic Information Byond Account: williammurdoch Character Name(s): Aisha Hrakra, Angel Sealis, Kaliahsurzi Ka'leozhe, Akilina Tarasova AI Name(s): None Discord username + tag: CatsinHD#4202 Age: 19 Timezone: American Eastern Standard Time (EST) When are you on Aurora?: On weekdays, typically in the afternoon/evening timeframe around 7pm-12am. On weekends, predominantly from 11am-9pm. Depends on classwork and such. Experience How long have you played SS13?: About 3.5 years if I were to guess. I don't know exactly when I started. How long have you played on Aurora: 2.5 years give or take. My forum account here was made on July 11, 2020 so that's my best guess. How much do you know about SS13 (Baystation build) game mechanics?: It varies from department to department. I have a decent overall knowledge and have been learning how to interpret the code. Do you have any experience moderating for an SS13 server?: None Have you read through the criteria thread; https://forums.aurorastation.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=4198 - and believe that you mark off all the criteria?: Yes, however I do need to work more on being more concise. Have you ever been banned, and if so, how long and why?: I haven't been banned. Personality Why do you play SS13?: I play SS13 primarily for the depth of the game combined with the roleplaying capacity. While some areas of SS13 in general are quite deep in regards to mechanics, the way that everything interacts with each other and can affect just a single round of SS13 is already intriguing enough to me. This is combined with the sheer capacity for roleplay SS13 has alongside how the interface forces me to use my imagination to see the interactions and conversations. It all comes together to give me just about the only game I play anymore. Why do you play on Aurora?: Community and standards. Aurora is the HRP server, at least in my mind, and is directed right at what I look for and enjoy out of SS13. The community, while not utterly perfect, is still a friendly group that I enjoy being involved with. While Aurora is sort of unique in the focus and standards it has for roleplay, any other server could have those same standards. What seals the deal for me are the other players playing the game. The lore also plays a factor. I enjoy it thoroughly and like the ever evolving nature of it, arcs and additions alike. However, compared to my first two points, it takes a back seat. What do moderators do?: Moderators help administrators manage and monitor the server to ensure everyone is playing by the rules and upholding the expectations placed on them. They are also a figure in a community which are viewed as sources of information, help, and general role models for how to act in a community. What does it mean to be a moderator for our server?: On Aurora, moderators primarily help with ensuring that players and characters are playing within the rules and roleplaying to a level expected of someone on the server. They are also around to help with issues that someone may have, whether it be an issue with someone else or an issue with the game itself, through ahelps and questions over discord. A moderator is also meant to work with the admins for when certain issues are out of their control, or when a higher authority is needed to make a decision. Why do you want to be a moderator?: As I mentioned before, a large draw for me to Aurora is community and standards. Both are key reasons of why I stay and having the opportunity to help the community and maintain it is something that draws me in. What qualities do you possess that would make you a good moderator?: I am able to but aside myself for issues and conflicts to view things in a neutral view. I quite often try to look at opinions, problems, and conflicts from every angle and side before I make a final decision or verdict. Over the years I have learned to keep a level head and to handle when people get heated, knowing when I may be getting flustered or riled up as well, and adapting accordingly. I also would say I tend to be courteous and nice even when annoyed (What food service does to someone...) How well do you handle stress, anger, or insults?: I am able to handle stress and insults well. I've learned to ignore insults sent my way, especially over an online environment, and stress is something that doesn't tend to affect me in a way that would harm my ability to think and make decisions. I would also say I can handle anger well. Anything Else You Want to Add: None
  18. Extended treatment can work for minor damaged organs and use of weaker chemicals like peridaxon (weak as in it doesn't heal as fast as surgery or targeted regeneratives) although the medbay is not designed for it by far. Too small, not enough space, too hard to monitor in the space given (no way in hell I'm putting a damaged organ case into the recovery room). Mechanical organs can't be involved with it, though. They don't heal naturally, can't be healed with chemicals, but can still damage other organs and cause MSOF. The only treatment is surgery with nanopaste or a screwdriver. This is an instant fix. Extended care is a negative in just about every way for mechanical organs. As for diagnosing... yeah, some organs can be diagnosed by observation. Brain and lungs are easy because of the analyzer and stethoscope. Eyes work with the penlight. Heart is harder but still possible (check their blood levels and oxygenation. If blood levels are full but BO is low, heart is not pumping). Other things, though, like the liver are difficult to spot without the body scanner. The only way I know of to diagnose the liver without a scanner is to inject inap and see if it turns into RMT, because a damaged liver iirc lets potassium enter the blood and inap+potassium= RMT. It could be done, just harder with some organs having details of their damage so small that most don't even know what to look for.
  19. It does show up on a full body scan and I disagree with this suggestion. The only way I would agree that mechanical organs should be a separate scan is if machinists were integrated into medical. Even then, I'd be very cautious because of how absolutely important organs are to brainmed. Every organ, if damaged, can kill a patient. Determining if an organ is damaged shouldn't rely on a role that is as separated both departmentally, physically, and mentally as machinist with how deadly damaged organs can be. This is not mentioning that in the medical bay, including FRs, there are 7 people that can do a full scan and make a diagnosis from there (2 physicians, 2 surgeons, 2 first responders*, and 1 CMO). If they have mechanical organs, that is just 2 and in my personal experience the machinist role is not reliably filled enough to have my confidence of putting scanning mechanical organs as their SOLE domain. *First Responders, as far as I know, are allowed to use body scanners if they are trained on how to use them. This doesn't affect the fact they cannot make advanced diagnoses, but they can use the scanner regardless. At this point, I'd much rather looking into splitting machinist into 2 oles, or shaving down its responsibilities. It is in a limbo state between science, engineering, and medical. I am fine if surgeons are able to fix mechanical organs and machinists focus on robots, or if there is a dedicated (perhaps singular), surgeon, in medical, trained on mechanical organs, but that breaks the cardinal sin of adding a new role and makes the surgery chart even more complex. As it stands, though, it is stretched across too many responsibilities which, while under the "mechatronics" umbrella, are conflicting in their focus.
  20. Afaik, and as far as I have personally roleplayed it, the Surgeon (and CMO) can only repair organic organs. Mechanical organs either need nanopaste or consultation with the machinist. Granted, that is just me and whether the chart says this is not affected by my own opinion. I tend to follow these lines, though, because surgeons lack screwdrivers. I do think boggle makes a good point. There is a very clear and mostly well-adhered to system of delegation and flow which a machinist breaks in the current system. It doesn't help that organ repair can either be vital to recovering a patient, or incredibly minor. Both require either moving the patient to the machine shop or yelling for the machinist to come to medical. Without serious remapping, access change, and comms change, I don't have a feeling Machinists will be able to break into the flow of medical or have an easy time with patients who do need help when there is a lack of nanopaste. As for limb installation? Keep that with the roboticist. Surgeons can do it in an emergency, maybe, but prosthetics and how they work and are attached is the domain of roboticist and should stay that way.
  21. I would agree with both Evandorf and Carver. On Aurora, the machine shop had an adjacent OR with window tint, a viewing area, and I'm pretty sure door control too. This current one doesn't look near clean or sterile enough. I'm not sure how much space there is, though, to put a new OR at without making the main part of the machine shop even smaller. I guess the alternative is giving roboticists medical and OR access, but that feels a little too far frankly.
  22. Hi! I have a little to add to my application, but before that let me answer your questions! 1. I don't know the precise date I started, but the forum says that I joined 2 and a half years ago (July 11, 2020), although iirc I was playing for a few weeks before I joined the forum. Either way, a good estimate is 2.5 years. 2. I believe I should be active enough. I would have to balance it with university studies, but I should have enough time to be active and contribute. As for my additions, I would be remiss to not mention that between the time I posted my application and since you responded, I have submitted some changes to the wiki and two were accepted. First change was CMO and the second was Janitor. Both were accepted on January 14th.
  23.
