AmoryBlaine Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 Shit tier item that adds nothing to the atmosphere or roleplay in any given round. It has two applications; 1. spam shooting it at someone while their character completely disregards the very deep mental and emotional implications this has of them changing in height, weight, brain size, species, ect. 2. spam shooting it at someone to disrobe them in order to stop them from attacking you, typically followed by a fireball. Wizard suffers from a lot of shitty LRP gimmicks and useless time wasting activities such as shooting a single person over and over so they can get a desired look to their character not otherwise accessible through the loadout. The access to this item adds to that sort of behavior from wizards. I suggest removing it.
Catnip Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 Please. In all my time playing here, Wizards using staff of change has always been the only thing (other than transform sting spam) that just instantly obliterates my interest in the round and convinces me to just cryo. Wizards being able to change somebody's form could still be a neat mechanic, but it would need to be something with a cooldown, maybe a cast time, not just a 'click to delet roleplay' button.
Trazz666 Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 -1. I've never seen the staff as a problem. Sure, it can be annoying to have to play something different for the rest of the round, but at least you're alive (or if you get fireballed afterwards, then you only have to wait for respawn). I've personally experienced more positive role-play from it's use than negative. Tbh I would even argue that it should be reverted to old staff of change where you could end up with things like monies, slimes, or that 1 time I made someone a xenomorph.
Conspiir Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 Make it into something controllable, at least. Not randomly bashing someone with it a billion times hoping for a good outcome. Didn't realize we were Sheogorath over here.
VeteranGary Posted September 22, 2018 Posted September 22, 2018 I agree with this kinda, maybe enforce it more with rules? It's fine for like, roleplay purposes but outright combat uses? That's a dumb way to use it, turning your victim into a lesser being so they can be killed faster is kinda unfair. In my uses however, never used it as a weapon, but I've surely seen it used as one. Can be extremely annoying when you're changed to a vox, or vaucra and suddeny can't breathe.
Kaed Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 I think it needs to be removed until we can rework it into not being garbage.
Pratepresidenten Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 Just take away the RNG element and have it give you an option for what you want the target to become. More manageable, and opens up more routes for the wiz to take gimmickwise.

That's a pretty big buff for it though and would have to be balanced with limited used, a long cool-down, or making the change temporary.

Just strip away the critter transformations to prevent shitty low-health ganks. But as a counter balance, a five minute recharge timer? Dont want it to be too long.
Alberyk Posted September 23, 2018 Posted September 23, 2018 You can't turn people into simple animals, those are another spells. Also, removing the rng factor might end in wizards turning people into warforms or xenomorphs.
Sytic Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 It's a one click disarm fuck-you-over powergame staff with endless charges. It's only application is that it's fucking hilarious sometimes, but that doesn't fit a HRP environment we strive for. +1.
Ron Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 You can't turn people into simple animals, those are another spells. Also, removing the rng factor might end in wizards turning people into warforms or xenomorphs. Â this is my main concern and why I said it would probably need to be accompanied with a nerf edit: I have an idea for it. You can pick what you turn them into, but each one is temporary and they will revert to their original form after some time. The more dangerous the selected mob, the less time they spend as they mob. That way 1. You can pick what to turn them into, and 2. they aren't permanently removed from the round (I consider being turned into a parrot being removed from the round).

as someone who was turned into a parrot and nearly removed from the round if it weren't for one other player willing to put up with a screaming parrot on the verge of a meltdown, yes. i wholeheartedly agree. as it is right now it's worse than killing someone because there is *no* way to fix getting hit by the staff right now. so please, add a revert after some time and a cooldown on its use.
AmoryBlaine Posted September 24, 2018 Author Posted September 24, 2018 Time-based revert plus a longer cooldown between shots. Maybe have a switch on it like other items so it changes between states of convert and revert.
Alberyk Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Being turned into a parrot happens when you try to use the staff without being a wizard. Anyway, it feels kinda too complex the concept of temporary transformation, with the time being based on species, and I feel it should be removed from the book selection instead.
Coalf Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Or, maybe the outcome controllable, temporary and with a drastically longer cooldown. That way it becomes a very effective control tool similar to flesh to stone or wizard cuffs.
Doxxmedearly Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 Either remove it or do what coalf suggests. Either way, it's really hurting the game by existing in its present state. +1
ben10083 Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 I don't like that staff, both times when I was hit as a borg I suddenly become a character in Detroit: Become Human and have to start trying to find a way to rp my char realizing it doesn't have a shiny chrome exterior and how this even could work with a robotic chip turning into a brain. -1, it just causes more harm than good.
Arrow768 Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/5318 partially implements whats suggested here. It reduces the number of charges in the staff of change and increases the recharge timer making it less useful for combat. But ultimately it should be rewritten into a system that temporarily changes people.
Kaed Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 This doesn't really fix the problem, it just makes the staff basically useless for anything except being annoying. The original purpose of this thread was 'remove the staff or maybe rework it'. It's a piece of lazily coded garbage, and remains one regardless of how many charges you put on it. Please just take it out until someone can fix it instead of trying to nerf it awkwardly. I should remind everyone we have a perfectly good temporary shapechanging spell already, called Baleful Polymorph. It fills the role much better than this. Sure, it doesn't turn you into a xenomorph, but is that really necessary?
