Desven tries to connect to the Hivenet
Desven replied to Desven's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Hey. Thank you for replying. We actually have had a few C'thur ZH Vaurcae lately, and I've been following the discussions about the matter on the discord. I agree there probably should be a mention of it somewhere on the wiki, as questions about Vaurca contractors often pop up. Second of all, I agree that xeno accents are cool, and in fact I would probably tweak Pax to have his, but it makes sense for the character (as being a Vaurca that has basically spent most of his life in Eridani) to try to conceal it. I've seen other Vaurca, played by Vaurca loredevs, that have implants for it; perhaps I would just set the auto-hiss for the s to turn into zz. As for the connections with the Skrell, I know that they are heavily tied, and I should perhaps expand upon that. The original concept was that Pax was basically an Eridanian Vaurca, but now that I think more about it, it is likely that he was born inside the Jargon Federation before being sent to Eridani. Because of that, he would speak Nral'Malic and probably has some Skrellian culture ingrained, despite his years at human space. I had mentioned that Pax enjoys reality shows, and likely has a bizarre idea of the idols promoted by the Federation, as well as those he may consider idols abroad (be it TV stars, somebody he admires, etc). I think part of the Sensate ideals mix well with the Skrell formation too, like their humor. Perhaps Pax's emotions are shown in a similar fashion as Skrell show theirs, with all his limitations to do so, of course. I think Pax is as money driven as a Vaurca can be, and greatly appreciates hard-working people too. Because of this mixed Skrell/Eridani background, he also likely believes in 'pulling one by the bootstraps' and just having financial security. And, of course, the attempt to try new sensations. The character I play the most, Pierre Godard, is really uptight and I often can't let him lose. Not that I would make Pax act crazy or anything, but I would like for him to attempt to be more humorous, even probably somewhat of a prankster, and also seek new sensations. I would like to express this more in humor rather than in physical scenarios. I think he, as the unbound of his brood, is greatly desensitized about the sensations and he tries to come with more humorous or joyful situations in his life, as well as melodramatic ones to balance it out. As for how it has affected him, I would say he enjoyed Eridanian nightlife, the expensive creative dishes and drinks that Oran is famous for and probably finds Biesel too tame for this. I would not hesitate for him to request exotic foods containing k'ois or something, just to get upset because the chef wouldn't know what he's talking about. In his formation, it probably allowed for him to fit better into the corporate yuppie-like environment of Eridani; and, as for now, I believe it will be, at least at first, a challenge for him to adapt, however, he will definitely feel grateful about the emotions he is feeling, be it despair or joy. -
I am hesitant because I feel like filling prescriptions is a way to RP with the chemist, which is a very isolated job that gets almost nothing to do once the fridge is stocked. I know I'm probably the minority, though.

My favorite part if this item gets approved will be everybody trying to still the console from Qoi. +1

The only thing I'm worried about is if the technomancer will be able to have a simple mob sidekick. I've never been one, but honestly the talking carp/cat/crab is my favorite thing about wizard.

Well, I was CMO that round and evaluated Davis' injuries. I can attest that Security was well staffed, so the aid of A'Asshan was really not needed, but also that although Unathi's claws are powerful, the damage that was caused (significant blood loss, fractured skull) was over the top. In fact I was surprised A'Asshan wasn't arrested, but to be fair security had a lot more going on and the situation became chaotic. The head is really vulnerable and by the ammount of damage made it makes me think A'Asshan tried to blind or decap Davis, to be honest. I really can't see how this behavior be excused.

I may be biased because Space Odyssey is one of my favorite movies, but I really like the idea behind traitor/malf AI. And while I do agree that the whitelist helps, particularly to ensure higher AI roleplay, it's a bit sad to see nobody plays it anymore, and if the AI is ever traitor they are really mild. Yes, it's true antag AI can easily be murderboney, but if people are whitelisted we have better expectations of them. In fact, I would like to say antag AIs that don't hold back and induce some serious paranoia, at least enough as for the crew to come together and find their way out of the dangers. I know it's possible because I've seen it happen before.

I don't want to sound rude but the flashing images from your avatar sometimes make me feel like I'm going to have a seizure.

A Vaurca application. BYOND key: Desven Character names: Pierre Godard, Luciano Morricone Species you are applying to play: Vaurca What color do you plan on making your first alien character: RGB 55, 0, 120 Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: (One paragraph minimum) My understanding of Vaurcae since my last application has changed drastically, mostly due to exposure to them. I just think they're neat unique and I've grown to become a bug fanboy myself. Just from the adorable accents, to their unique behaviors and colors. Their social structures are also pretty interesting, and I think they demand a lot of the player to not just 'make it human, but bug'. Perhaps one of the other perks I see now is their unique Hivenet communication. There have been a lot of Vaurca players lately, and I feel like I'm just missing out from all the fun they have together. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: (One Paragraph minimum) Probably the biggest difference is their eusociality. I think it's one of the most fascinating aspect of them, and the dynamics they have between each others is amazing. I've seen Vaurcae bond to build projects together, or if not, at least to make that poor Viax run around everywhere. Many find it unsettling when it happens, and I agree it kind of is if you're under the 'human' mentality, but once you start thinking like a Vaurca it makes perfect sense. Their lost technology , and their augmentations are also unique lore-wise. I think it's a trope that's not really explored much in-game and would love to expand it more. Lastly, I mention their augmentations because while the Vaurcae we see in game are not heavily augmented, the mechanics of phoron filtration are quite interesting and also add for a mechanical challenge. Character Name: Ka'Akaix'Pax C'thur Please provide a short backstory for this character: (Approximately two paragraphs) Taking from my past character idea, this Vaurca stems from an alliance between the C'thur hive and Zeng-Hu Pharmaceuticals. Although Unbound, Pax and his siblings were specifically targeted for integration in the Eridian society and Zeng-Hu work ethic. Because of such, he has received implants that allow him to speak 'almost' normally, although sometimes a z might slip, which he finds embarrassing. Since his separation from the VR, he has worked as a pharmacist, mainly trying to synthesize better next generation ZH branded chemicals. Because of all the recent changes onboard the station, and because of work policies that unfavored Vaurcae, he was relocated to the Aurora, no longer in research but as a regular pharmacist. As a member of the Xetl hive, and because of his Eridani experience, he is almost competetive; not that he wishes a promotion, but rather he is displeased by his relocation, and bringing up the conversation might make him bitter. Work aside, he finds humans quite interesting. He is an avid watcher of reality holo TV and wacky comedy shows, and if caught in a good mood he will try to make a joke to socialize with his coworkers. As my past character idea, he is also interested in papercrafts and allows himself to consume some toothpaste when out with friends. He is new in Biesel, and laments the loss of his friends that came with his relocation, but he's eager to make new lasting friendships too. What do you like about this character?: Mostly his curiosity, and his desire to blend in. This doesn't mean he's planning to become more human, and he is proud of being a Vaurca, but he doesn't like the discrimination he has faced in human space because of it and thinks that, instead of aiming for societal change, it's best to just please the humans that surround him. I'm not sure if I'll keep the bureaucracy aspect I had thought of before, but I would like to make him a corporate shill in his own strange, Vaurca way, such as refer to Liqin Hsiao-Li as Queen Liqin. And although I would like to eventually make a character with a thicker accent along the way, not having the auto-hissing on means I will have to be conscious when and how his Vaurca accent shows. How would you rate your role-playing ability?: Feeling somewhat generous tonight, so I'll say I'm fairly good at it; however, I always seek room to improve. Notes: Shilling an app is hard, especially if it's a species app and while I'll share it with the bug gang I can't really guarantee there'll be much feedback. I hope loredevs take this into consideration for whenever they plan to start the inquisition questions.

Isn't it weird how many of our characters don't live in the Odin/Aurora, and when we have to leave mid-round we cryo even though, realistically, our characters wouldn't probably do it? I think it was @Faye <3 that once had to leave as Yhara and she said she had a lecture on Biesel. I thought that was a pretty creative excuse, which gave me an idea: In departures or a dock, add a door or a stationary small shuttle. You simply drag your sprite to the door as you would do with the cryo and you would get a similar message as stasis. Then you simply ghost and you're removed from the round. No need to see the shuttle arrive anywhere or something, the console would say '[Character] has departed in a personal shuttle.' or any similar message. I don't know how, lore wise, it would fit better; I'm not sure how adamant we are about making the round-end shuttle the only way to leave Aurora, dead or alive. This also wouldn't replace the current cryogenics beds and all, it would just add variety.

Desven's Command (CMO actually) application
Desven replied to Desven's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Hi. I get what you mean, and I think it's part of the characters' growth. I think it's especially shocking for someone from that background to learn, at first, to become more tolerant of others; however, he has done his efforts and I am aware being in command means pushing it even further. That being said, he tries to not get into such discussions anymore, and he has peformed prosthetic surgery recently. The times Pierre suggested, before, for another doctor to do so were when there were two surgeons available, but as of late, even with another available surgeon, he has performed such operations. I'm short, this is something I've thought about ICly and OOCly, and it is also part of the character arc I have planned. -
Also @Alberyk I would like to know if these changes require a new thread or not, I don't want to break any forum rules.

Okay, so DasFox helped me convey what I wanted. It's a custom cape with the green house colors and in white, to fit better the profesion of doctor. It also has a golden neck to symbolize his new status as count. PierreCape.dmi

Necroing this because Sgtsammac had the same suggestion just now.

Would somebody be as kind as to move this switch outside the glass box? Perhaps here, or literally anywhere else?

Desven's Command (CMO actually) application
Desven replied to Desven's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Hey, I think I know the round you are referring about. There were multiple emergencies and we had no EMTs, and I was at the brig trying to rescue someone when a sec officer and I got blinded by one of the antags, who was eventually pinned down. If I remember correctly, those who remained on the medbay were all interns. Normally, if there's an emergency (and it is not too grave) I would have an intern go, but they didn't seem interested and someone has to act fast, regardless of how the sensors are reading it. When I returned to medbay I did some surgeries and tried to stay away from the salt, I overheard some officers talking about the dead warden and then my colleagues that kept saying, even on the radio, that nothing could've been done. However, failing to treat you goes against the triage; you aren't supposed to pick the patient that looks the easiest to deal with, but rather, the one that is in most need. The rest probably panicked, were too focused on the other guy, or whatever, but I have to make it clear that as a surgeon, I had no real authority over them. I simply avoided the conflict because I wasn't involved. However, if I were CMO, it wouldn't have gone that way. I would've had to, first, let know the medical team their mistakes, and then, prevent more comments from our side. But I would've also communicated with Security to try issue and apology. There is just so much one can do to avoid OOC salt, and while I think one is to be expected if they are to die in game, the way both departments reacted was not okay, and if the comments continued on deadchat or ooc, especially insults, it would've probably gained them an administrative warning. When trying to fix relations in game you have to keep in mind this, and take the matter seriously. Multi-tasking as a whole, while stressful, I think I can handle. There are certainly instances, both as my current role and on other servers where I've played CMO, that I've made mistakes while a hectic situation, but then you also learn how to hook up to three IVs if necessary and keep the inaprovaline in if there's been a great bloodloss. There are certainly moments where I've needed assistance and I yell for somebody to help me do CPR because you can't CPR and give meds or perform surgery. I am aware that there's a player on the other side and that some ranking players will be more important not only for the ground progression but for their departments as a whole. Somebody dying on you is always underwhelming, but that's also what makes brainmed so fun and different from, say, tgmed where you can revive ad infinitum. It is likely somebody will die in a hectic situation, and a CMO is aware of this. We will try to prevent it, but we have to understand that that's also the way the code is and there's just so much one can do in certain scenarios. Bashing medical because a miner was DOA is ridiculous, for example, but that doesn't mean we don't make mistakes like on that particular round you mention (or one vampire round after that, where some were left bleeding and eventually died from those wounds). In short: you have to make sure everyone is cordial in the aftermath, and avoid later OOC complaints as much as you can. -
That goon bar looks nice, I also like Bay's solution. I think it's doable, and I kind of dislike the current kitchen layout because it's too crammed, while the bar has all these tables you could go eat at. Certainly two counters, one room would be a good idea.

Desven's Command (CMO actually) application
Desven posted a topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
BYOND Key: Desven Character names: Pierre Godard, surgeon; Luciano Morricone (might delete this little bastard) How long have you been playing on Aurora?: late Jan Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: Mainly, to be CMO and Consul. For a longer answer, I just love medbay. I cannot seem to leave the department. And I have met great people while playing that have greatly helped me and I wish not only to help the newcomers, but expand on the experience I have acquired all this time. Why did you come to Aurora?: A mix of seeking brainmed mechanics and roleplay. My roleplaying in SS13 had been limited before, and I have enjoyed the few times I did it, a lot. My friends would tell me about their characters (in other servers), how they wrote stories for them and all, and I got really excited for the idea. I didn't think I had it in me, Then, after a round of just snooping around, I went ahead, read the lore, and took the challenge. I have enjoyed it ever since. Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Yep! Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they?: I have been bwoinked, especially when I was new, but otherwise I believe I am a clean bean with no warnings. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplaying is lending yourself to give life to others. I do creative writing and I am very much under the belief that the characters are alive. Before I began roleplaying myself, I would see my friends and their characters and I would often think they were merely extensions of themselves. However, after all of this experience, mainly on Aurora, I now believe that they can become their own, react on their own ways, and even have some extend of 'free will', as I believe characters on paper do. Often Pierre reacts on ways I would not expect him to, at first; I believe all of us have been surprised by how our characters develop, and take on their own. Around September I gave a course on creative writing focusing on this aspect, and I have found that my theses can apply to roleplaying in spessman too. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: Give direction to a department (allow for the others to partake, not get in the way and do everything on your own), make sure things are running smoothly, clean and with a purpose. In medical, especially, it is required to be able to coordinate the EMTs, make sure the fridge is stocked, physicians are attending the wounded and surgeons are performing surgery. Regarding other heads, make sure to keep a strong liason with the department and command, construct a narrative with the antagonists, and involve your department if possible (regarding medical, it is always). In summary, make sure everyone has a fun, memorable round. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: I believe you have to be an exemplary roleplayer. Not that you cannot make mistakes, but rather, you have to gain respect from others, and guide them (if they are new to the roles). Also, there is the narrative that is built in each round, and as a head of staff, you have the responsibility of the flow of the game, and how you are going to impact others, not only those under your department. In medical, depending how a CMO acts, it can often end up in all of security dying or keeping them patched up for a little more playtime. It is one of the departments that impacts on whether a player stays in round or not, and you have to act fast. I am aware that, as CMO, I cannot act as I have acted while being a surgeon, and while I do plan to play as surgeon when possible, I do expect to improve on my actions. Medical, when crowded, can often make mistakes of bumping with each other. In other servers where I play as CMO, like Bay (which has a more limited medbay staff roster), I try to coordinate so that everyone gets to have fun when playing. It probably sounds bad, but medmains get their playtime (besides the roleplaying and such) from treating patients. Ensuring everyone gets to treat one can be tricky when, more often than not, there are rounds with only one or two visits to the doctor, but promoting things like physical exams, or just making the medical team engage more with the others in extended or green alert, might be a good idea to keep everybody busy. Could you give us the gist of what is currently happening in Tau ceti and how it affected your character and their career?: I arrived to the server after the events of KOTW, and, in a way, Pierre did too. He comes from Dominia, and has been adapting to what is happening. However, he can feel the change, from the logos on the walls to how the departments seem ever so much more diverse, with different contractors. He is not exactly loyal to Nanotrasen, but he is supportive, and in Medical in particular, the introduction of more Zeng-Hu staff is somewhat unsettling, as Pierre holds some disdain for the company that manufactured his prosthetic. Nevertheless, he is willing to learn to live in the 'Biesel way', more tolerant of others, especially the huge amount of shells that share his profession. What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted?: CMO, but I might make a Consul in the future (still undecided and unplanned, so huge TBA) Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking.: Pierre Godard, Chief Medical Officer. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I've stated before that I would at least give myself a 'You've tried' ribbon, however, I think I'll say here that I am fairly good- my character has had a good reception and I do get in the role, so to speak. So yes, I think I'm doing this okay. Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action?: Yes, and I like it that way. I think it helps clean up some bad apples or just people that have stopped playing. Have you familiarize yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles?: Yes. Extra notes: I know I have a (pending) Bug app, but Readthisnameplz encouraged me to submit this one, as they are not alike. I do not think I'll apply for any other race soon, though, as I intent to keep growing my character. And for those awesome CMOs that I have played with- sorry! I am not trying to steal your job or anything, but lately Medbay has found itself without command and I would like to step in without having to become interim or something. -
As of now, it is almost impossible to transport critical patients. If they have MSOF, you require somebody performing CPR the whole time. It is the same if they are really low on blood. Many patients die just when you're transporting them to the OR, because of how quick MSOF gets you. There are some issues I have with MSOF, but honestly, the fact that you can't even move a critical patient to surgery because they'll die on the roller bed is crazy. Bay has an item like this, called autocompressor. It basically does auto CPR, but it's not as effective as the real deal. With this, you gain some time to treat these cases.
-
Please, please, for the love of God, someone add more light to the exam rooms and the ORs at medical. They are really dark and if you were to polarize the windows they get even darker. I can barely see what's going on when I need the privacy irl, and ig it would make even less sense for my character to act like he can see. I'm guessing the psychiatrist's office has a similar problem.
-
I probably should've said this back when it was first announced, but after thinking about it more, I am not too happy with how the showers, locker room and smoke room from the new medical layout look. Not only because of the awkward window, but the locker room feels too crammed and I like how the current smoke room is connected to the break room. My character doesn't smoke, but if he did, he would use a lot more because I think it's a really cool room. So perhaps the smoke room could be moved back to wherever the break room will be now, and use that space to expand the locker room.
-
I've given it a bit of thought and although I tried to make it easy to be able to tell apart from Caladius colors, if they're still really too similar I guess I could change it to a tone of green.
