i am going to need to make the assumption that you are arguing entirely IC here. My response changes a little based on this perspective. For the moment i will assume we are pretending that there isn't a human player sitting at a keyboard playing the IPC. It is unreasonable to completely disqualify IPCs from being security personnel just because they cannot feel pain. A machine is able to perfectly asses a threat and correctly determine the proper response based on the tools it has available and the programming it has received. They do not need to get tasered to understand "this really fucking hurts when i shoot it at organics". Same thing with pepper spray. In fact the practice of it being done in real life is kind of dubious. Most companies who manufacture Tasers DO NOT recommend they be used on cadet officers. Its just kind of accepted that officers will be think twice before using it if they themselves have experienced it. While pain is indeed hard to describe and probably impossible for a machine to understand i do not think it prevents them from understanding what excessive force is. As far as a machine's bedside manner is concerned, well im not sure. As i understand the medical profession has huge problems with "descriptions of pain". Theres been countless overhauls and suggestions and various standards to try to apply. i would argue that a machine could be programmed to scan for a set of variables and then attempt to make some educated hypothesis on how much pain the individual is in. Would they be as effective in that regard as a human doctor? I have no clue! I dont think thats enough to completely bar them from the field. Its weird though because i kiiiiiiinda agree with a part of your conclusion. My biggest problem with the lore has always been our lack of restrictions. our lore is not really the nicest universe at times. its full of racial tensions, civil wars, bigotry and amoral megacorps. A lot of this struggles to manifest on the station. We like to say "people are not their characters" but thats not really true. A part of ourselves will almost always bleed through in our role play. I like to think the vast majority of us are reasonable people and NOT racist or bigoted. Therefore everyone is totally cool with reptar being a CMO and mr. bigglesworth being a security guard. We have essentially no species restrictions when it comes to jobs available on the station. I think that is a problem.

I have some issues with your reasoning here [mention]calion12[/mention] and i will attempt to explain them. The relevant server rule is this. Our goal is simply to asses whether there was a point or a reason behind a murder. Since this is a role play server we generally expect them to be a bit better than "i want the captains ID". Now by your testimony and that of the OP it seems to me this condition is reasonably fulfilled. Does it suck that someone was removed from the round? Yeah sure it does but we have to remember that death is part of the game. Either they killed someone to drive a story or they did not. I dont think his notes about similar situations are relevant here if he didn't break a rule. As i said it seems to me he had a good reason and a point to do what he did. Its kind of unreasonable to go "well normally this would be ok but you've went too far in situations really similar to this before". Now given these two points i feel the warning should be expunged entirely. If i am misrepresenting you or you do in fact feel he broke a rule please dont hesitate to argue it.

Pretty much all of what we expect can be reasonably deduced. Its rare that it even affects the judgement call on punishing someone. [mention]Coalf[/mention] Might be able to elaborate in greater detail but as far as i am concerned heads of staff are just expected to be a little "better" at the game. Both in role playing and in various department mechanics. A research director consistently leaking phoron everywhere or a chief engineer blowing up the engine every other round would be looked at a lot harsher for example.

I agree with everything except this. you as an HoS do not get to order me to not wear a stab vest on green. You can order me to put it on if i am refusing for some silly reason. Security guards on our server have all the training of actual cops. the job title is just different. security guards in real life vary WILDLY in terms of experience and gear they carry. Generally security guards in real life are NOT trained to get involved physically. they are a physical deterrent and often dont even carry weapons. At least here in the US the training to become one is basically just a 40 hour course in a classroom. "observe and report" you dont get physical. thats for actual cops. You cannot really draw a fair comparison between security guards in real life and those on our server. Though you CAN find some security guards in real life that are almost or as well trained as cops.

a station security officer is just as trained as a cop in biesal. they are trained to get involved and deal with physical situations. yes they are much less common in a workplace aboard a station but you STILL NEED TO BE PREPARED for situations you are TRAINED TO DEAL WITH. wearing a stab vest is a reasonable level of protection because in almost any situation where you would go "i need to go get my stab vest" you are already fucking dead. knives are fucking dangerous. you NEED to protect your vital organs in some way. No this doesnt mean we need to raid the armory every shift "because the crew might make guns". thats an absurd argument i hope we dont devolve into it. We are talking about a reasonable level of protection based on the duties and training of a job. You are absolutely a liability if you refuse to wear the vest and you are DEFINITELY wrong if you try to order your officers to not wear them on green.

After some discussions in PM i am lifting this ban. Specifics of the discussion where mostly related to the OPs place of residence and other identifying information. That will of course remain confidential. You should be unbanned but if you arent just let me know and ill see what i can do.

This is one of numerous niche situations you will find in this game. Making a set policy for every single one is impossible without subjecting our players to several novels to accompany the thesis of rules we already have. That being said we do make some attempt to form an understanding of sorts on the ethics of dominate. It bears repeating that we are not a hivemind and differing accounts of some staff allowing a certain thing while another staff member does not allow a certain thing will always be a constant battle we as a team will have to deal with. From the discussions we have had internally about this ability we have attempted to arrive at some general guidelines. The over riding philosophy here is that dominate is an absurdly overpowered ability and provides you with pretty much unlimited power in shaping a specific situation. With that in mind heres a few thoughts. Dominate orders must be short term There is no set time limit. Generally its around five or maybe ten minutes. Things you could reasonably accomplish in that time frame. The victim must make a good faith effort to follow it Dragging your feet, screwing up intentionally or "getting caught" are all examples of poor sportsmanship. Trust me you're not gonna get punished for playing badly. However it will raise some eyebrows if you receive a legitimate order to kill someone and you decide to toolbox them instead of shooting them in the head with your shotgun. Keep in mind you arent permitted to lawyer AI laws outside of egregious mistakes. It logically follows we do not allow it for dominate orders. Do not tell people to kill themselves Even in situations where you have a valid reason to kill someone this is super bad form on the part of the vampire. I cannot stress this enough. The ability is crazy strong. Put some effort into it and try to think of something a little more interesting. It is of course ok to make someone follow you so you can suck their blood. Vampires need blood to do things.
