Skull132 Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 Okay so, short backstory. In my university, I've been teaching students since my first year there. The main field that I teach is robotics and embedded programming. PROBLEM: due to the copious amounts of Corona beer that have managed to infest the western world's water supply, university is CLOSED and so the courses I normally teach are on pause. (Can't really teach robotics without hardware hrhr.) So how about a short introductory series of DM coding? Format: About 2 - 4 academic lectures (90 minutes each). Shit to cover: Basics of programming (what's a function, what's a variable, how do I make things go zoom!) Note: THIS IS GOING TO BE THE VERY BASICS. Literally programming 101, the first two to three labs you'd have in uni. So if you already know the basics of general programming, not for you. But if you're foreign to the subject (like any HS graduate who enters uni would be), then this should be exactly for you. Basics of navigating SS13 shit-code. Basics of Git and contributing. Implementing a rainbow trout. The pace will likely be somewhat fast and I'll skip over 90% of the academia that I've thus far skipped over. The end result is that you'll have a fuzzy understanding of wtf programming is and maybe where to continue from in terms of implementing simple things. How's it all gonna happen? Organizational details: Well, Discord has video sharing. So we might as well use this. Willingness to chat on mic would be VERY NICE but I'm fine being the lone speaker as well. Class should be no larger than 10 people. Homework may or may not be assigned. Timezone is going to be comfortably European but still accessible to (East Coast) Americans. Exact time will be agreed upon once I have a finalized list of participants. Largest class size I'm comfortable instructing alone is like. 20 - 25. Though I will exercise my right to discretion as is necessary when selecting participants. If you're interested, leave a reply. If you have questions, leave a reply or hunt me down on Discord. I'm gonna fucking regret this probably! But who knows. Quote
Carver Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 If there's a written version of the lectures after the matter, I'd be interesting in seeing those for the sake of reference in self-learning. Quote
The7thLain Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 I'd love to get more information on this sort of thing. I've wanted to contribute to the server in some way, but have always felt discouraged due to my inability to really do much be it spriting or mapping or coding. While it sounds like this will be just a basic class, I would love to participate in it so that I might be able to help the server in the future! Time zones may be an issue for me, but I would love to find out more about this. I love the idea and I am looking forwards to perhaps participating ^-^ Quote
ArtofWASD Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 (edited) seeing as im currently logged out of the forums (God dam forums. never remember your login after 30 days). Im messaging you here. Im familiar with github, but an incredibly rusty with everything else. Im interested in lectures. (This is a copy paste from a DM) Â Edited April 7, 2020 by ArtofWASD Copy Paste Quote

I am horrible and do not have written material nor will I generate written material. I'll teach you how to use SOME written material. I might generate some examples or checkpoints of code, buuut that's gonna be it. Quote
Caelphon Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 I'd love to learn, just wondering whether when the lessons would be? Typically, I am busy during the day but free at nights (thanks to COVID, I'm free 24/7 but not sure how long this lockdown might last). Quote

I can't make any lessons and I'd rather someone else be present. Quote
Haydizzle Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 I’d be very curious how to do this! I’d love to partake. Quote
geeves Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 As someone who has worked directly with Skull for quite some time now, I can guarantee that this'll be a pretty good experience. For anyone scared of doing something with our host and head dev, don't be, he's as dangerous as kitten with little programmer socks. He used to help me in the beginning (still does tbh)Â and it genuinely helped a lot, and the cold emotionless husk of a cranium actually seemed to enjoy helping dumbass me, so, if you were iffy about joining, give it a shot. Uaine Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 Oh wow! You've got a lot of people interested in this! The future is bright for SS13! I'd also be very interested in this, if the room will allow it! Quote
Boggle08 Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 I'd like to participate too! I'm GrandMasterChef on discord. Quote
HouseOfSynth Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 I'd love to attend if there's space. If not then recordings would be appreciated if possible! Quote
UnknownMurder Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 Interested. I've reached out to you twice about understanding Aurora Code. Quote

As I said in the OP, this is gonna be programming 101. Maybe only the final lecture or 2 is gonna be ss13 specific. The rest is basic programming using DM. Quote
Garnascus Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 Knowing more about how the code works could potentially turn me from an awful headmin into a semi-decent one. I am interested time depending, my schedule is pretty tight. Quote
SampleTex Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 As much as I'd love to participate I will be unable to do so because of time zones, so I will instead ask, what are the odds that this will be posted as a recording after the fact for the rest of the server who can't participate or are reluctant to do so? I'd love to learn. Quote
